MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 5, 2000) Christian Lovendahl, crew chief of the No. 19 Yellow Freight Chevrolet NASCAR Busch Series team, was killed in an automobile accident today returning from Richmond International Raceway.
Lovendahl, 27, was the nephew of NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Mark Martin. His wife, Jennifer, survives him.
The automobile accident, which included two crewmembers in addition to Lovendahl, occurred off Faith Road, just outside of Mooresville. The team members were driving home after landing at Concord Regional Airport. Michael Johnson and Jason Owens were treated for minor injuries at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and released.
An investigating police officer confirmed Lovendahl was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. According to the officer, the evidence gathered at the scene indicates he was not wearing a seat belt.
At this time, the family has not provided information regarding arrangements or memorials. Lovendahl is a native of Batesville, Ark.
