BUSCH: Freddie Query GM for Hank Parker Racing

DENVER, N.C. (Jan. 24, 2000) Hank Parker Jr.'s NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division team now has a general manager.

Freddie Query, 1998 Slim Jim All Pro Series, NASCAR Touring champion, recently joined Hank Parker Racing as a full-time employee not long after Rick Rathbun's Team Marines Racing signed on as Parker's primary sponsor.

Query will assist crew chief Dave McCarty with both shop and at-track operations. Query worked with the team as a consultant at a handful of events during the 1999 season.

"I feel really good about it," Parker Jr. said. "We're really excited -- we've worked together in the past. Freddie helped us at South Boston (Va.) and Phoenix and Homestead (Fla.) last year and we ran really well there. (Parker scored top-5s at South Boston and Homestead.) I'm really looking forward to it. It's definitely to my advantage, that's for sure."

Query also competed in a limited number of high-paying Late Model events during the 1999 season, and enjoyed much success. To hang up the helmet and become a GM was a decision he did not take lightly.

"There were a lot of things that made me decide to do it," Query said. "I've had a good relationship with (team owner) Hank Parker and Hank Parker Jr. ever since I started working as a consultant with Hank about four years ago. Hank's definitely progressed, and they've got the nucleus for a really good team. They felt that I could be a valuable part of what they want to achieve -- and I felt I could be a valuable part. With Rick Rathbun's Team Marines Racing coming aboard as a sponsor, it gave them an opportunity to be able to afford to do what they wanted to do. It was an opportunity I couldn't turn down."

"I think it's all positive," McCarty said. "Freddie helped us last year, and everything was good. I've had to wear a lot of hats here over he last year. He'll take a lot of that off my shoulders, and I can concentrate more on making sure that the crew is doing what they need to do, and the cars are put together right. That's a big plus because he can help oversee some of the cars that are being built and take some of the load off me here."

Team Marines Racing has also added two new employees to its crew. Andy Spenner, 24, is from Hoyleton, Ill., and works as a mechanic on Parker's new 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlos, while Todd Gordon is the team's new engineer. Gordon, 30, is a native of Camden, N.Y., and drove Limited Supermodifieds at Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway and Late Models at Evans Mills (N.Y.) Speedway before moving to North Carolina.

The team is testing at Daytona International Speedway on Monday through Wednesday in preparation for the season-opening NAPA Auto Parts 300 on Feb. 19.

On its way home from Daytona Beach, Fla., the entire crew will visit the U.S. Marine Corps' Parris Island (S.C.) facility to see boot camp firsthand.

Parker will get off to an early start at Daytona's Speedweeks by co-piloting a Dodge Viper with fellow NASCAR Busch Series driver Lyndon Amick in the Motorola Cup three-hour enduro on Feb. 4. Amick and Parker are close friends, and Amick's father owns the car.
