BUSCH: Kansas: Kenny Wallace race notes

Race Recap: Kenny Wallace and the No. 23 Stacker 2® team entered the weekend at Kansas Speedway with high hopes of leaving with a top-10 finish. The team was not only racing for a victory in the Mr. Goodcents 300, but it was also trying to maintain the 10th position in NASCAR Busch Series drivers' standings.

The car was good off the truck, but the more changes that were made, the looser the car's handling became. Wallace was pleased with the car exiting turns one and two, but felt like it handled too loose entering turns three and four. For the fourth time in as many weeks, the No. 23 team had an early qualifying draw. Wallace was the fourth driver to attempt to qualify. He was second at the end of his qualifying run, but with many top drivers yet to qualify, he ended up in the 12th position.

The Stacker 2®/YJ Stinger® team had its work cut out for it during the Happy Hour final practice session. The team tried many different combinations to get the Stacker 2®/YJ Stinger® Chevy ready for the race. The team struggled to find a balance between speed and handling. The car seemed never to have both, which is imperative at a track like Kansas.

When the green flag waved for the Mr. Goodcents 300, Wallace what not sure what to expect from the No. 23 car. The first caution flag waved lap four. This caution helped Wallace move to the seventh position, which was his highest position the Stacker 2® Chevy would reach all day. On lap 14, Wallace told his crew that the car handled very loose, and he had to make a great save to keep the car from hitting the outside retaining wall.

On lap 61, crew chief Chris Rice called Wallace to pit road for a green flag pit stop. Rice decided to take a spring rubber out of both the left rear and right rear of the car. The crew also made track bar and air pressure adjustments. The changes did not seem to work early on, as Wallace lost a lap to the leader.

The third caution flag of the day waved on lap 82. Wallace and Rice decided not to pit, believing Wallace did not have enough time to see if the changes benefited the car. It was a good decision, as Wallace reported on lap 90 that the car was turning much better and no longer pushing.

On lap 101, the fourth caution flag waved. Wallace pitted for a minor air pressure adjustment, four tires and fuel. When the race restarted, Wallace said it was the best the car had felt all day. The Stacker 2®/YJ Stinger® car began posting faster times than that of the race leader Joe Nemechek.

All the hard work of the Stacker 2® team came to reality on lap 176, when the caution flag waved and Wallace returned to the lead lap. Wallace restarted 14th and was closing on the top 10.

When the seventh caution flag waved on lap 191, Wallace brought Stacker 2®/YJ Stinger® Chevy to pit road for track bar and air pressure adjustments.

The final caution waved on lap 198 when Nemechek and Tony Stewart collided. This caused the race to finish under the green-white-checker rule. On the final lap, Wallace was racing hard for the 14th position when he blew a right-front tire and hit the wall. He only lost one position and finished 15th.
