SPARTA, KY. - The return of the NASCAR Busch Series, which attracted a sellout crowd of 70,338 in 2001 and set a Greater Cincinnati market sports attendance record, will highlight four weekends of racing in 2002 at Kentucky Speedway.
Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager Mark F. Cassis announced the speedway's full 2002 schedule today, which also includes the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, NASCAR Gatorade All-Pro Series, NASCAR Goody's Dash Series, the Indy Racing Northern Light Series, ARCA RE/MAX and USAC National Midget Car series. He also announced season tickets will be on sale starting Monday, October 1.
"The 2002 schedule came together very nicely for us. We had a goal of having major racing events for May, June, July and August and it worked out," Cassis said. "We're looking forward to another great season. Our new Interstate 71 interchange will be completed, we're adding new "preferred" parking, new loge seating and additional RV and camping areas. All said, I'm very pleased as we remain on schedule versus our projected growth plans."
The speedway's season begins in May as the ARCA Re/Max Series debuts the "Channel 5-155" on Saturday night, May 11. The race will be broadcast live on WLWT-TV, Channel 5 in Cincinnati, in primetime beginning at 8 p.m. (EST). The weekend also includes a Friday night, May 10, short track program, featuring the USAC WORLDCOM National Midget Car Series, ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series and the Baby Grand Stock Car Series.
June will feature return of the NASCAR Busch Series on Saturday, June 15, followed by a Goody's Dash Series race. Also on tap for the weekend will be Friday's NASCAR Gatorade All-Pro Series event and NASCAR Busch Series pole qualifying.
July will pair the popular "Kroger 225" NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series on Saturday, July 13, with the "Blue Grass Quality Meats 200" ARCA Re/Max Series race on Friday night, July 12.
August brings open wheel racing back to the track for the third consecutive year. The "Belterra Casino Indy 300" generates pure speed on Sunday, August 11, live on ABC at 1:30 p.m. The NASCAR Gatorade All-Pro Series will also be part of the weekend of racing as they take to the track Saturday, August 10, for "The 84 WHAS 150."
Season ticket packages guarantee fans seats to all sold out race events, first right to renew seats for future race events and access to a new "preferred" parking area. Season tickets may be ordered by calling 1-888-652-RACE toll free; by completing the ticket form on line at www.kentuckyspeedway.com; or by visiting the ticket office at 2216 Dixie Hwy, Suite 200 in Ft.
