On Daytona: Todd Bodine will tee off the 1999 NASCAR Busch Series season at the annual season-opening event at Daytona International Speedway. In his last Busch Series event at Daytona in 1997, Bodine finished second to eventual season champ Randy LaJoie. Bodine says that the race car determines success on the superspeedways.
"Success on the superspeedways tends to depend on the car and motor," Bodine said. "But, I've always run well, drafted well and done the right things on the superspeedways. Hopefully, when we go to Daytona we'll have a good car that will allow us to run up front."
On the 1999 championship: For the third time in his career, Todd Bodine will compete in the NASCAR Busch Series for car owners Frank Cicci and Scott and Jeff Welliver. Bodine's first full-time ride in the Busch Series was with Cicci-Welliver Racing from 1991 to 1993. Bodine aligned himself with the multi-car operation again in 1997. With primary sponsorship from Phillips 66, Bodine and company hope to make the third time the charm in their pursuit of the 1999 NASCAR Busch Series championship.
"We've come very close to winning the championship on more than one occasion," Bodine said of his alliance with Cicci-Welliver Racing. "We have a team capable of winning the championship. If you asked every member of this team what their goal is for this year they will say a championship. We are very focused on winning in '99."
Equipment: The No. 66 Phillips 66 Chevrolet Monte Carlo underwent a facelift during the off season. Instead of the familiar black Chevy, fans will see a new paint scheme featuring red, white and black colors. Bodine, who will pilot the No. 66 Phillips 66 Chevy in 1999, is the designer of its new look.
Bodine Favorite: Todd's favorite race car driver when he was a kid growing up in Chemung, N.Y., was racing legend David Pearson.
