BNS: Watkins Glen: Paul Wolfe race summary

Long day ends with 14th place finish for Wolfe in crashfest at Watkins Glen.

Watkins Glen, NY -- Paul Wolfe, driver of the Scott Products®/Heinz USA Monte Carlo, was among several competitors to have a disappointing day at Watkins Glen International Speedway in the NASCAR Busch North Series "Little Trees" 150 on Saturday, Aug. 10. The four-hour plus epic event included six caution flags, two red flags, twelve cars that did not finish due to damage sustained in early wrecks, two drivers that ended up on their roofs and eight extra laps in addition to the scheduled 62 due to the BNS green flag finish rule. In the end, Bryan Wall prevailed after the dominating entry of Dale Quarterly ran out of gas, and lap 62's second, third, and fourth place cars of Brad Leighton, Matt Kobyluck and Wolfe were involved in a turn one accident.

Wolfe had a very strong run after qualifying third in Bud Pole qualifying on Friday, Aug. 9. He led laps 25-29 but was forced to work his way back to the front after being assessed a NASCAR drive through penalty for speeding on pit road following a lap 29 pit stop. "I guess I was distracted by an oil spill on pit road, and lost track of my speed," the 25 year-old Milford, NY native said. "That hurt us a little, but I knew we could still contend for the win with half a race to go."

At lap 34, Wolfe came out of the pits in 15th position. By lap 43, he had already worked his way back to fourth in one of the most impressive charges of the day. When race's fifth caution of the day came at lap 63, Wolfe still sat in fourth following Matt Kobyluck, Brad Leighton and race-leader Dale Quarterly. On the restart, Wolfe got an excellent run into turn one under Kobyluck. With the pass on Kobyluck nearly complete, Wolfe and Leighton made contact sending Wolfe spinning and Leighton into the gravel in turn one. After pitting, Wolfe had to settle for a 14th place finish.

"Like a lot of teams today, we had a rough race," Wolfe said. "We had a great car, and I did everything I could to earn this team and our sponsors their first win. Everyone is working really hard, and I know it will come. When we come to the track, we come to win; that's the bottom line."

The "Little Trees" 150 is one of seven races to be televised on the Speed Channel, with its scheduled air date to be Monday, Sept. 9. Tonight, Speed Channel is scheduled to air the Busch North Series' July 20 event from New Hampshire International Speedway, where Wolfe finished ninth. Paul's next scheduled event is Sept 14 at New Hampshire.
