Cajon May 24th preview

EL CAJON, CA. The late model sportsman stock car drivers face double-duty when they return to action Saturday night at the 3/8-mile paved oval.

A pair of 30-lap main events await Cajon's premier division. The original schedule had called for a single 40-lapper this time around. But the cancellation of the races on April 19 necessitates the twin features. Cajon is part of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series; local drivers need to have at least 18 events to be eligible for regional and national awards.

Joining the sportsman in action at the track this Saturday will be local street, pony, and bomber stocks. The night will conclude with a destruction derby. Race time is 6:45 pm. Qualifying runs start at 5:15 pm. The gates will open and practice will commence at 4:00 pm. Admission prices are $10 for adults on the east side and $9 on the west side. Kids from 6 --12 are only $3. Children under the age of 6 are free when accompanied by an adult.

This will mark the first of four doubleheaders for the sportsman. Future twin bills are planned for June 28, August 30, and September 20. This marks the first season that the track will have four double-main-event-nights during a single season. No doubt, these four nights will be crucial to deciding the track's 2003 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series champion. At the very least these four nights will make up 42% of the entire season. Points are on the line in both features each night. So instead of the usual 97 possible points, one driver could earn, or lose, as many as 147 digits on the double nights.

Drivers tend to be somewhat cautious in the first race in order to have an undamaged and still fresh car for the second event. But even the best-laid plans can go awry on Cajon's tight and tricky asphalt. In order to allow for maximum time for the teams to prepare or repair their cars Saturday night, the first main event will come very early in the evening. Then the heat races and main events for the other three divisions will follow with the second 30-lap main event being the last racing event of the night.
