BUSY WEEK AT CAJON SPEEDWAY Cajon Speedway Advance for June 30 - July 4, 2001

EL CAJON, CA. Cajon Speedway will offer somebody for everybody this Fourth of July week. There will be one night of serious racing (next Saturday June 30) and then a night of fun and frivolity (on July 4).

The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series will return to normal next Saturday when the late model sportsman, Grand American modifieds, pony, and bomber stocks return to action. The sportsman have survived their first of two scheduled double main event nights and will return to their regular format with a 40-lap feature this weekend. The Grand American modifieds will run a 25-lap contest. The bomber and pony stocks each will run 20-lap events. And just to give fans a taste of the fun which will take place the following Wednesday, the night will conclude with a destruction derby.

Then on the Fourth of July the focus will be on the light side. The track will host a factory stock enduro, a bus jump (yes they will be see how far a bus will jump), a boat trailer race, and of course fireworks. Race time each night is 6:45 pm. Saturday's racing will be preceded by qualifying at 5:15 and practice at 4:00. On July 4, the fireworks will be shot skyward at 9:00.

A factory stock enduro has not been run at the track in a dozen years. The event will be a 150 laps, 75 of which will be run in each direction. A coin will be tossed to determine whether the cars run clockwise or counter-clockwise first. This prevents the racers from making special adjustments to the suspension. To date 39 entries have been received for the crowd pleaser, which will pay $1000 to win.

Most of the entrants in the enduro are not regular racers at the track. A couple of the guys who compete in the trains, Dan Hildebrand and Tim Neuhaus, are entered. Richard Elliott, a former train racer, is coming back. Former bomber stock driver Jimmy Gamboa has signed up. Todd Phelps, a regular in the street stock class, has also build a car. One of the regular track officials, Billy Arban Jr., will also get his first taste of competition. Most of the remaining entrants will also be making their first racing laps.

Boat Trailer Race III is also being eagerly anticipated by the fans. Last year's July 4 marked the initial such event at the track and no one knew quite what to expect. It turned out to be probably the most single talked about event in the track's history. Boats on trailers are towed behind race cars as they race. The only rule is that the boat (not necessarily the trailer) must still be attached to the car when the checkered falls. So there are several contortions of the boat and the trailer as the driver speeds around the track - both the boat and trailer may be up on their side or even upside down!
