Cajon Speedway September 21st preview

Final points night for Sportsman at Cajon.

EL CAJON, CA (09/21/02). The battle for the top ten positions in the 2002 edition of the late model sportsman stock car standings at Cajon Speedway has come down to one final race. That event will occur this Saturday night at the 3/8 mile paved oval located next to Gillespie Field.

While Danny Gay sewed up the championship and John Manke assured himself of the runner-up position last Saturday night, the remaining eight spots are still up for battle and will be decided in the double points 40-lap Grand Prix.

That event will cap another busy night of racing at the track. Sharing the billing will be the local street stocks, pony stocks, and bomber stocks, plus the touring legend cars of California.

While the sportsman regular season ends Saturday night, there will still remain one additional show for the local Grand American modified, street stock, pony stocks, bomber stock, and factory stock drivers. The double points season finale for these groups will occur on September 28.

Race time this weekend will be 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs start at 5:15 PM. The gates will open and practice commences at 4:00 PM. Admission prices are $10 on the east side and $9 on the west side for adults; kids from 6-12 are $3 and children under age six are free when accompanied by an adult.

There are only 250 markers separating third place Jeff Seifert from tenth place Rick Chavez in the late model sportsman standings. Sandwiched in between are Jeff Wright, Dee Cable, Claude Bell, Bob Wickey, Jerry Gay, and Stephen Peace. And with a maximum 147 points possible this time around, none of these drivers are yet secure in their standing. Seifert, Wright, Gay (who is Danny Gay's father), and Chavez have all made their way to victory lane so far this year. But each of the remaining competitors is capable of winning.

Saturday's sportsman contest will also be the fifth of six Sid's Auto Body bonus nights. The winner will earn $1050 instead of the usual $800. In addition Sid's Auto Body is sponsoring the weekly Hard Charger Award that night. That award is $200. So if the main event winner also earns the most passing points for the night, the victory will be worth $1250.
