Canadian NASCAR driver and Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee drowns in fish boat tragedy.

Victoria, British Columbia - February 27, 2004 - Roy Smith, a four time champion in NASCAR Winston West competition and Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee (2002), died tragically early Thursday, when the Hope Bay, an 80 foot commercial fishing trawler he was crewing on, capsized in heavy seas off the northern tip of Vancouver Island.

Smith was 59, and had competed in the famed NASCAR Daytona 500 on three separate occasions, his best result was in 1982, when he finished in the 10th position. Smith resided in Malahat B.C., a short drive from Victoria on the southern most tip of Vancouver Island.
