FIELDS SET FOR IROC, GOODY'S 300 AND FLORIDA 200
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Full starting fields were established in qualifying Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway for Saturday's Goody's 300 NASCAR Busch Series race for the Grand National Divisions and for Friday's Florida 200 for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series; and the starting lineup for Friday's Round One of True Value Hardware Stores presents the Dodge International Race of Champions XIX was set in a special drawing.
Ricky Rudd will start from the pole in the 40-lap, 100-mile sprint for the True Value Dodge IROC Dodge Avengers. Rudd, the 1992 IROC champion, will lead the all star field of 12 competitors to the line in an Orange car, starting alongside defending Daytona IROC winner Dale Earnhardt.
In qualifying action Wednesday, snowmobile racer Tim Bender of Colden, N.Y., posted the fastest second-round qualifying speed for the Busch Series cars, as a 45-car starting field was set. Bender ran 184.949 mph in the Ford that is partly owned by Winston Cup driver Derrike Cope.
Among the drivers who did not qualify for the event were David Bonnett, son of the late Neil Bonnett; Shawna Robinson, who will try to qualify for her first NASCAR Winston Cup Series race in Thursday's Gatorade Twin 125-Mile Qualifying Races; Dale Fischlein, crew chief for Winston Cup driver Dave Marcis; former Winston Cup drivers Hut Stricklin, Jimmy Hensley and Darryl Sage; and defending Florida 200 winner Mike Swaim.
On Thursday, the first Gatorade Twin will go to the line at 12:30 p.m., immediately followed by the second race. A total of 63 cars are scheduled to start the two races. Steve Seligman of Lake Forest, Ill., apparently withdrew his Mariani Leasing Ford from the second Twin after an accident in practice Tuesday caused extensive damage to the car. Steve Kinser will start the second Twin in his backup car after a single-car accident in practice Wednesday afternoon. Kinser lost control in Turn Two and hit the outside wall. He was uninjured in the accident.
Plenty of Reserved Seat Tickets are available for the Gatorade Twins. The entire frontstretch grandstand will be sold as reserved seats. The only unreserved seats for the Twins are in the Tiny Lund Grandstand located outside Turn Two on the backstretch. For information, call the Daytona Ticket Office at 904-253-7223.
