BIGGEST PRACTICE DAY TURNOUT IN HISTORY OF GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

BECHTELSVILLE, PA MARCH 25, 2000 . . . There was a big problem at Grandview Speedway during the free-to-the-public practice session on Saturday. More race teams showed up for the five hour practice session than ever had in the history of the track. The problem was, where to put them all. More than 100 modifieds, late models, street stocks, PA sportsman, midgets and sprints showed up at Bruce Rogers' one-third-mile banked clay oval in Bechtelsville, PA. And there was a healthy turnout of fans in the grandstands on what could have been considered a perfect weather day for stock car racing. "Interest in short track racing just may be on the upswing," said Kenny Rogers who helps promote the popular short track racing facility with his father. "We think this is going to be a big year for short track racing at Grandview and in the area. We are keeping our admission prices at the same level we have had for the last few years. And we will be getting fans more involved in some of the at track activities. We want to make it a family sports experience. And we do have the very best dirt track racing talents performing here on a weekly basis. We are excited about 2000." Last year's NASCAR Modified champion Terry Meitzler was on hand for the practice day. He had two cars, one for Grandview and one for Big Diamond Friday night action. Meitzler feels that he has a good chance to make it two titles in a row. Ray Swinehart is anxious to forget the dismal season he had in 1999. He has brand new Bicknell race cars to run at Grandview and Big Diamond. He hopes to turn the season around and be in the thick of the chase for track titles. Tom Mayberry, disappointed by not being in the championship chase last year despite winning seven features, looks to make a run at the title with Mike Kelly's A&T Chevy sponsored entry. Mayberry is optimistic about his chances. Jeff Strunk will be back, he practiced with a Mopar powered racer on Saturday at Grandview Speedway, looking for championships at Grandview, Big Diamond and a second straight Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth/Cummins PA NASCAR Modified Championship. There is some big money at stake. But don't count out the likes of Jon Kellner, now part of a two car team with Ed Aikin; Kerry Kratz, Dennis Bailey, sophomore racer Todd Heydt, Doug Manmiller (returning as a regular) and many others. Kevin Hartnett is back with his own team. And Glenn Strunk has to be considered a strong contender at Grandview with the prized Norm Hansell #357 ride this season. Chip Slocum, winner of eight features in one season a few years back, would like to have another season like that. He is optimistic that this will be a strong season. "Rookie" Keith Brightbill, impressive in his outings at other local speedways, will be a regular at Grandview Speedway this season. And it was nice to have Kenny Brightbill, Mr. Modified to many race fans, on hand for the practice session. He showed that he had not lost the touch on the banked clay oval. In Late Models Jeff Teets is back, new colors on the car, looking for another championship. Dean Stoudt, in the thick of the point battle for the last couple seasons, may be trying to change his luck. He will have a yellow car with the familiar #77 on it and will be looking to win another late model title. Former late model champion Terry Bartik was at the track looking to hook up with some team. John Durling, always strong with the Golden Chevrolet sponsored #7, has to be a contender for the title. And there are many others who will be chasing the championship. The 2000 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series for the NASCAR Modifieds is here. And the Late Models will be part of the NASCAR Exide Shortrack Late Model Series. For the month of April Grandview will offer the exciting PA Sportsman as part of a tripleheader show each Saturday, 5 p.m. Saturday, April 1, is the season opener with a 38-lap modified championship event offering $3,000 to win topping the program which kicks off the 38th consecutive season of stock car racing at the Bechtelsville, PA oval.
