MEITZLER AND SCHLOSBERG WIN NASCAR FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

BECHTELSVILLE, PA JUNE 18, 2000 . . . For the second time this season Terry Meitzler, the defending NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified champion, drove the Meitzler Excavating entry to victory in the 30-lap NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified stock car feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. And it was 18-year-old Sam Schlosberg bringing the Green Lane Auto Sales/E.F.Precision Group mount home first for his first career Exide ShorTrack Late Model feature victory. Warren Kohler grabbed the early lead over the 30 car starting field with Kevin Hartnett moving in front of the pack with Hartnett Lettering entry on the fourth circuit of the one-third-mile, banked clay track. Terry Meitzler, he had started 13th, was already in fifth spot. At 10 laps Hartnett was still in command but Kenny Gruber was on his tail while Chip Slocum ran third. With two thirds of the race in the record book Hartnett, having missed two events because of health problems, was still in front holding off Gruber and Slocum. Terry Meitzler, rim-riding on the outside was in fourth and charging. With the Coors Light scoreboard indicating seven laps to go Meitzler found a hold in traffic, squeezed the #21A in front of the pack, and was on his way. The Kutztown, PA racer, currently leading in the NASCAR Modified track standings and in the Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth/Cummins PA NASCAR Dual Track Modified point chase, worth $15,000 to the top point man at the end of the season, held off late race challenges from Hartnett and Slocum to win. In addition to the $2,200 first place money he also earned $200 as the Timber Wolf Hard Charger coming from 13th to 1st. Second spot went to Kevin Hartnett (Perkasie) followed by Chip Slocum (Ewing Township, NJ), Kerry Kratz (Bechtelsville) and Glenn Strunk (Barto). In the 20-lapper for Exide ShorTrack Late Models Bill Henning put his Dodge powered WNPV-AM/Henning Supermarket machine in front of the pack at the start. Four laps later teenager Sam Schlosberg moved in front coming from 6th. Once in front Schlosberg (Green Lane) had a relative easy time as he rode to his first career victory. Bill Henning (Lansdale), who has been having some problems with his new Dodge motor, managed to hold second with Junior Grebe (Boyertown) getting a strong third place finish. Multi time champion Dean Stoudt (East Greenville) was fourth and Casey Ebright (Pottstown) managed to take fifth after challenging for the top two spots early in the race. Qualifying heat races for the NASCAR Modifieds, 65 of them in the pits, went to Smokey Warren, Doug Manmiller, Jack Hartnett, Tom Mayberry and Chip Slocum. Consolations were won by Ray Swinehart, Ron Haring and Rick Schaffer. The $360 Cash Dash went to Smokey Warren. The late model heat races were won by Bill Henning, Casey Ebright and Bill Neff while the consolation win was earned by Mike Erb. PIT NOTE: In the July issue of SPEEDWAY ILLUSTRATED magazine Al Robinson lists his Best Bets. He included ten tracks that are sure to show you a good time. "No track has a more fitting location than Grandview, which is reached by turning off Route 100 onto Passmore Road. Current Pennsy sprint car kingpin Fred Rahmer cut his teeth on the tight high-banked third-mile of dirt, where weekly small block modifieds fields of 50+ mean qualifying for the feature is a major challenge." Our thanks to Al Robinson and SPEEDWAY ILLUSTRATED. Actually we had been attracting 60+ modifieds for the past few weeks. Early evening showers threatened to cancel the Saturday night show but a check of the weather computer in the pit office showed Kenny Rogers that there was just a brief shower in the area and once that was gone, the sun would be shining. The computer was right. The showers did help give the racers a great track surface for the night's racing program. Coming to Grandview on July 22 is the Green Mamba Jet Car which always produces some excitement and they are looking for a volunteer to let them "burn up" your passenger car. Fireworks will be part of the July 1 Harry's U Pull-It Auto Parts/Kress Recycling Night at Grandview Speedway. Featured will be the Firecracker 40 for Late Models and a full show of Modified stock car racing. Coming up next weekend at Grandview Speedway is O'Connor Truck Centers/Freightliner Night featuring NASCAR Modifieds and Exide ShorTrack Late Models, at least 13 events of stock car racing. Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. More than 100 guests of O'Connor Trucks Centers will be on hand for the racing action. On Sunday night, June 25, 7:30 p.m. the Keystone Pretzel PA Sprint Speedweek Series kicks off at Grandview Speedway with 410 sprints being featured along with KARS Limited Sprints. Time trials are set for 7:30 p.m. Autograph session at 5:30 p.m. Raindate is Monday, June 26, 7:30 p.m. Grandview Speedway is located on Passmore Road, just off Route 100, in Bechtelsville, PA, 10 miles north of Pottstown.
