RON HARING AND LOU EGRIE ARE FIRST TIME WINNERS THIS SEASON AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY NIGHT

BECHTELSVILLE, PA JULY 10, 1999 . . . On Saturday night at Grandview Speedway Ron Haring won the Hatfield Quality Meats 30-lap NASCAR Modified feature race. He lead every lap. The previous week he "won" the Kochel Equipment First Alternate Award when he was unable to make the feature event. It just goes to show how tough the competition is for the NASCAR Modifieds at the Berks County one-third-mile, clay banked oval. Haring was the 11th different feature winner this season in NASCAR Modified competition at Grandview Speedway. And in the 20-lap Hatfield Quality Meats NASCAR Shortrack Late Model feature Lou Egrie did not lead all the laps but he lead enough. Egrie, a former track champion, was in front of the pack at the finish to claim his first win of the season. The victory made Egrie the eighth different feature winner this season. Ron Haring (Allentown) put his Albrights Home & Garden Center entry out front at the start of the 30-lap feature for NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modifieds and that is where he stayed for the entire 30 laps. In the early stages of the race Haring was challenged by Ken Lindaberry and Jack Hartnett. And for several laps it was the Haring/Lindaberry show as they drew away from the field. At 13 laps current point leader Terry Meitzler came from 11th to take third and become a factor. At the midway point it was Haring, Lindaberry, Meitzler and Jeff Strunk. With ten laps to go the battle for the top spot remained the same. Rick Schaffer, the leading feature winner at Grandview amongst active modified racers, was in the wall in the third turn with mechanical problems. On the restart Meitzler took a run at Haring but fell short. At the finish it was Haring bring his self owned mount home first, his first win of the season, fourth of his career and first since June, 1998. The win was worth $2200. Second spot went to Ken Lindaberry (Coopersburg) followed by Terry Meitzler (Kutztown), Jeff Strunk (Bethel) and Tom Mayberry came from 17th to 5th to earn the Timber Wolf Smokeless Tobacco Hard Charger Award worth $200. Kyle Pensinger put his Haldeman Ford sponsored mount in front of the pack at the start of the 20-lap feature for NASCAR Late Models. Lou Egrie was quick to move up to challenge and at four laps was running second. However three time champion John Giesler was also in the thick of the battle. At the midway point Lou Egrie had his Barney's Auto Parts / Rising Sun Penn Jersey entry in front with Pensinger and Giesler "nipping at his heals." At the finish the Philadelphia racer held off the challenges and brought the Frank and Doris McCarthy owned late model home first. The win was worth $600. Second spot went Kyle Pensinger (Lyons Station) followed by John Giesler (Aston), new late model point leader Rick Todorow (Quakertown) and Terry Snyder (Green Lane). Jack Hartnett won the first of four NASCAR Modified heat races with the others going to Ron Haring, Chip Slocum and Ed Aikin. Consolation wins were taken by Donny Erb and Tom Mayberry while the Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash was won by Ed Aikin earning him $355. The Late Model preliminary events were won by Dean Stoudt, Kyle Pensinger, and John Durling with the consolation race going to Mike Bedell. PIT NOTES: Jim Bagley, the veteran modified driver who suffered a heart attack at the track a couple weeks back, was at the track ( not racing) just enjoying an evening of spectating. He will be out of action for most of the balance of the season. He did want to thank everyone who sent cards, letters, telephoned and he said he was impressed that he heard from people as far away as Indianapolis. The August 7 Forrest Rogers Memorial will be the Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth/Cummins Forrest Rogers Memorial 50 lap champion for NASCAR Modifieds. The event will pay $10,000 to win provided the winner is carrying the proper sponsor decals on race cars and proper patches on his uniform. If the winner does not meet all criteria set prior to the race, the first place money will be $5,000. The race is being increased from the usual 40 laps to 50 laps. And next week a new sponsor will be announced, OFFICIALLY, for the 1999 edition of the Freedom 76 which takes place on September 11 and rewards the winner with at least $20,000 in prize money and other perks. Lap sponsorships, heat sponsorships and other marketing opportunities are presently available for the annual classic. Telephone Ernie Saxton Communications, Inc. at 215.752.7797. Advertising for the official Freedom 76 program/yearbook (always a sellout) is also now available. Coming up on Saturday, July 17, is Jesse Baro Bulk Hauling Night featuring the NASCAR Modifieds and Late Models, at least 13 events of stock car racing. The green flag falls at 7:30 p.m. Rain date is Sunday, 7 p.m. And on Tuesday, July 20, 7:30 p.m. there will be four 25-lap features, no time trials and no qualifying heat races, run for CARQUEST ARDC Midgets, 410 Sprints, KARS Doorways Unlimited Wingless sprints and NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modifieds. Rain date is Wednesday, July 21, 7:30 p.m. Grandview Speedway is located just off Route 100 on Passmore Road, 10 miles north of Pottstown.
