BECHTELSVILLE, PA AUGUST 3, 2002 . . . With a large crowd in the stands, the Blues Brothers Act presenting comedy and music between events, Meme DeSantis entertained the fans in the stands with a victory in the rich Stauffer Construction Forrest Rogers Memorial 50-lap NASCAR Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. The win, worth $10,000, was one of the richest of his long career. The 20-lap feature for NASCAR Late Model stock cars was won by Rick Todorow of Quakertown, PA.

Danny Erb put his Devine Transport #44 in front of the field at the start. Rick Schaffer, one of the all time leading modified feature winners, charged to the front to challenge the leader. At 11 laps Schaffer got the top spot on a caution restart. And just two laps after that DeSantis was able to put the Berks Packaging/Poppy's Pierogies #357 in front of the pack.

Once in front DeSantis, had his hands full with challenges from Tom Mayberry, Doug Manmiller (a five feature winner), Ken Lindaberry and young Mike Gular.

The caution was displayed for a 23rd lap altercation between Shawn Reimert and Ken Lindaberry on the main straightaway. Both drivers dropped out.

At 25 laps, the halfway mark, DeSantis is still in front with Doug Manmiller right on his tail. The two battled side-by-side for a couple laps.

The rest of the race was pretty much the Meme DeSantis show though point leader Jeff Strunk put his Cummins/T.H.Properties #W9 entry in second and challenged the leader several times in the closing laps.

At the finish DeSantis, who resides in Temple, PA, was the winner earning $10,000 for his fifth win of the season. Second spot went to Jeff Strunk (Bethel) followed by Doug Manmiller (Sinking Spring), Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville) and Tom Mayberry (Sellersville, PA). For his winning efforts DeSantis also earned a $500 gift cerftificate, good on a Karcher Hot Water Pressure Washer from Kochel Equipment of Elverson, PA

In the main event for the Late Models, 20 laps, Bill Henning put the Henning Supermarkets #80 in front of the pack at the drop of the green as he has done a couple times more this season.

Rick Todorow worked his way to the front and challenged the leader for a number of laps before getting by Henning on a caution flag restart. With less than two laps to go Randy Stoudt, making a drive for an official eighth win at Grandview Speedway in the late models, made contact with another competitor and spun into the infield.

On the restart Todorow, who calls Quakertown, PA home, took control and lead the final two laps to get his first win of the season. Ron Kline (Salfordville) finished a strong second followed by Lou Egrie (Huntington Valley), Jason Miller (Germansville) and Bill Henning (Lansdale). Qualifying heats for the more than 55 NASCAR Modifieds on hand went to Kerry Kratz, Tom Mayberry, Rick Schaffer, Meme DeSantis and Keith Brightbill. Consolation events were won by Ryan Watt, Randy Bailey and Jason Smythe. The Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash worth $645.00 was won by Meme DeSantis in a strong showing that helped give him a clean sweep of the events he ran in during the evening.

In the qualifying events for the Late Models wins went to Rick Todorow, Ron Kline and Randy Stoudt

Jeff Strunk continues to lead the chase for the lucrative Grandview Speedway NASCAR Modified title while Randy Stoudt is just 11 points in front of Lou Egrie in the chase for the Late Model title.

A busy time coming up at the one third mile, banked clay Grandview Speedway with Berks Mont Newspapers Night being presented on Saturday, August 10, 7:30 p.m. featuring the NASCAR Modifieds and Late Models in at least 12 events of stock car racing.
