LAMOREAUX SURVIVES LA CROSSE MELEE FOR FEATURE WIN

(West Salem, WI -June 17, 2000) When you advance from the B-Main into the feature at a track with the tough competition that you find at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, you need a little luck to get into the top ten at the finish. You need even more luck to take home the checkered in the feature.

Mark Lamoreaux finished third in the B-Main, just two spots away from not even making the feature field, but when contact between Tom Carlson and Kurt Thicke on the opening lap of the Bob Johnson Lubricants 25 triggered a 20-car accident, he found himself in the top five, and seven laps later, he was in the lead, and headed for his second feature win of the season. With the win, Lamoreaux became the first NASCAR Late Model driver ever to advance to the feature from the B-Main, and come away with the feature win.

Carlson and Thicke started on the front row of the Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Model feature, and Thicke pulled into the lead through turns one and two. Carlson tried to duck from the outside row to the inside as the cars came out of turn two, and he turned Thicke around in front of the field, triggering the accident that turned the backstretch into a parking lot, bringing out the red flag.

Todd Oliver, Tony Bagstad, Jim Hagel, Tom McClintock and Tim Nelson took the brunt of the damage, that left them and three other cars up against the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway logo on the backstretch wall. Bagstad's River City Ready Mix Monte Carlo burst into flames briefly, but he was able to escape the car without injury. None of the drivers were seriously hurt in the incident, but several top cars, including points leader Kevin Nuttleman, were caught up in the accident.

With the front row gone, Kraig Burrows somehow managed to slip by the accident on the high side before cars started piling up, and he inherited the lead on the restart. Steve Holzhausen took the lead briefly, but Burrows battled back to lead the first five laps, as first Brad Powell, and then Lamoreaux moved up to challenge.

A second yellow flew on lap six, as J. Herbst and Mike Belling tangled in turn one, and they collected five other cars, including Nuttleman and Thicke again.

The race was green the rest of the way, with Burrows holding onto the lead for two more laps, before Lamoreaux worked his way around on the outside. As Burrows battled to hold Powell back in third, Lamoreaux started building up a lead.

Burrows' battles on the inside of the track ended on lap 14, as he backed off, and Steve Carlson and Paul Proksch both got by him, moving into third and fourth behind Lamoreaux and Powell.

Powell and Steve Carlson closed on the leader, and Carlson took to the outside on lap 17 to get by Powell for second, but he couldn't make a pass on the 26 car in the front. Powell held onto third, taking over the points lead in the process, with Proksch and Burrows rounding out the top five. Tom Carlson finished sixth, followed by Holzhausen, Mike Belling, Marv DeGarmo and rookie points leader Todd Korish. Nuttleman battled back to finish 12th, while Thicke was 14th at the checkered flag.

Powell was fast timer, at 98.598 MPH, while J. Herbst won the B-Main to advance to the feature. heat wins went to Marv DeGarmo and Greg Croell, and Tony Bagstad and Bob Timm won the Bud Dashes.

Mike Campbell led all 15 laps of the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Grand National Sportsman feature, but it wasn't an easy win. He pulled away from veteran Greg Scheck, who also drives a NASCAR Late Model, early, then held off late challenges from both Tony Ciano and Corey Jankowski, two of the quickest drivers in the division, to take the win. Ciano finished second, followed by Jankowski, Chuck Timm and Scheck.

The Sportsman B-Main went to Morris Proctor, heats to Scott Stingl, Randy and Rick Steinhoff, and the Bud Dashes were won by Sam Andersen and Corey Jankowski. Dan Gilster was the fast timer, clocking in at 86.466 MPH.

John Olson used patience to work his way into third place by the white flag of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but with a gap between him and the leaders, it looked as if he would have to settle for third. That changed when second-place Dan Secor hit leader Jeff Schaitel on the backstretch, and that gap was enough to keep him out of the incident, as he came around to the checkered flag and the win. Schaitel recovered to finish tenth. Jason Bolster took second, followed by Les Stanfield, George Prise and Al Bartels.

In the Thunderstox prelims, Bill Inglett took the B-Main, Adam Degenhardt won the Bud Dash, and heats went to John Olson, Dan Secor and Jes Tenner.
