Drake Triumphs at Gas City, Sweeps Border Wars Events

Jay Drake and the No. 21 Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises team not only won the battle at the I-69 Gas City Speedway in Indiana on June 3, but they won the war as well. The USAC Border Wars title, that is. Drake won the second heat race to lock him into the USAC National Sprint Car Series feature event and then proved why he is the defending series champion by leading all 30 laps of the race for the victory. The win, combined with his victory at Eldora Speedway in Ohio on April 30 in the first leg of the Border Wars XI series, gave Drake his second consecutive Border Wars title. Drake also regained the USAC National Sprint Car Series points lead with the victory.

Hoffman Auto Racing's Jerry Coons Jr., also picked up a podium finish in the Border Wars series, as he drove the No. 69 machine to a fourth-place finish. Coons Jr., also picked up a fourth-place finish in the first leg of competition at Eldora. The Hoffman hotshoe is currently ranked sixth in USAC National Sprint Car Series points.

Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises' Josh Wise earned a hard fought 11th-place finish on Friday night, as the No. 20 team battled back from a 28th-place qualifying position to make the feature event. Wise, who had climbed into the top-ten during the feature, spun under the green flag and was relegated to the rear of the field. Wise battled his way back through traffic to finish just outside the top-ten group. He is currently seventh in USAC National Sprint Car Series points.

The USAC National Sprint Car Series will return to action this Thursday, June 9, at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Two Top-Tens for Lasoski; Swindell Snares Win at Eldora

Danny Lasoski and the No. 20 team have used the last two weeks to find their groove, as they picked up a top-five finish, a top-10 finish, and what could have been a victory in World of Outlaws Sprint Series competition last week. Lasoski earned a ninth-place finish at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in New York on June 1 and carried that momentum on to Sharon Speedway in Ohio on June 3, where he picked up a dash win. Mechanical woes sidelined "The Dude" while he was running in the second position, and he was credited with a 22nd-place finish on the night. The team battled back at Eldora Speedway in Ohio on June 4, setting the second quick time and wrapping up the weekend with a fourth-place finish.

"I just seem to like these big, fast half-miles," said Lasoski, who is gearing up for a race June 22 at Missouri State Fair Speedway that will benefit the Michael Ross Memorial Foundation. "It seems to make these Mopars really run good. I was going as fast as I wanted to go because my motor was faster than I was. We're just excited to be somewhat close to the front and we'll keep building off of that."

Sammy Swindell and the No. 5 Forbrook Motorsports team have most definitely caught the attention of the World of Outlaws Sprint Series competitors and fans, as they won their second A-main feature event in only a week at Eldora Speedway on Saturday night. Swindell drove the No. 5 machine to a dash win early in the evening en route to leading the 30-lap A-main from green to checkered. The No. 5 team also earned an eighth-place finish at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on June 1 and was credited with a 24th-place finish on June 3 at Sharon Speedway.

Brandon Wimmer posted an eighth-place finish at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park on June 1 for Wimmer-Luck Motorsports. After competing at Sharon Speedway on June 3, Wimmer went home to participate in his high school graduation on June 4. Returning to action later that evening at Eldora, Wimmer won the fourth heat race, and locked the No. 7TW team into the A-main event. The team ended the weekend with a 20th-place finish in the A-main event.

Lasoski is currently ranked fifth in World of Outlaws Series points, while part-time competitor Swindell ranks 18th. Wimmer, a "Rookie of the Year " contender, is currently in 19th position.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Series will return to action this Thursday, June 9, at I-96 Speedway in Michigan, and then moves on to the Sheboygan County Fair Park in Wisconsin on Saturday.

Terre Haute Win Aids Wise in Quest for USAC Triple Crown

Josh Wise dominated the Sumar Classic 100 USAC National Silver Crown event at the Terre Haute Action Track in Indiana on Saturday, claiming the pole and leading the final 53 laps on his way to the win. The victory vaulted Wise to the top spot in the USAC Silver Crown points battle; Wise also leads the USAC National Midget Car points race, putting him in the driver's seat in two of the three USAC divisions in his chase for the USAC Triple Crown. He currently sits at seventh in the USAC National Sprint Car Series.

"It's an unbelievable night," said Wise, as quoted by Jim Morrison in his Sprintin' Around column. "It couldn't be any better. I broke the track record [and] won the race. I couldn't ask for anything more. After all of the support from Tony and Mopar, it is just an unbelievable situation for me to be in."

The win was Wise's first USAC Silver Crown victory, coming after only four career Silver Crown starts. He passed Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises teammate Jay Drake on lap 47. Drake's No. 22 car was strong early on, passing Dave Darland for the lead on lap 44, but couldn't hold off the hard-charging No. 10 car of Wise. Drake held on to post an 11th-place finish, good for eighth-place in the Silver Crown points standings. The Hoffman Auto Racing car wheeled by Jerry Coons Jr., also had a strong showing at Terre Haute, posting a tenth-place finish.

The USAC National Silver Crown Series will return to action on June 25 with the Richmond Times-Dispatch 100 at Richmond, Va.

Musgrave Battles Back to Maintain Points Lead at Dover

Ted Musgrave and the No. 1 Ultra Motorsports team fought hard for a 17th-place finish in the MBNA RacePoints 200 at Dover International Speedway in Delaware on Saturday after suffering damage in a five-truck altercation on the opening lap of the race. But Musgrave was able to hold his Mopar Dodge Ram steady at the top of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points standings, leading second place Ricky Craven by 20 points.

"Obviously that wasn't the finish we were looking for today, but it could have been a lot worse," Musgrave said on truckseries.com. "Somehow we managed to hang on to the lead ... We'll head to Texas and keep working hard for those good finishes."

Musgrave, who has four top-five and six top-ten finishes in eight NCTS races, will look to rebound when the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series heads to Texas Motor Speedway for the Chex 400K this Friday.

Two-Top Tens for Francis in Rain-Soaked Week of Racing

Steve Francis collected a top-five finish and a top-10 finish over the rain-soaked weekend for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. The No. 15 team kicked off their week at Farley Speedway in Iowa. After battling mechanical issues throughout the evening, Francis fought his way from the 24th starting position to pick up the fourth-place finish in the A-main event.

Mother Nature won the battle at Eagle Raceway in Nebraska on June 3, as rain washed out the racing action. The World of Outlaws Late Model Series event is not to be rescheduled. Francis and the No. 15 team moved on to the Dakota State Fair Speedway on June 4, where rain once again washed out the night. The series elected to run the event on June 5, and Francis took it as an opportunity to pick up another top-10 finish. The No. 15 team started fifth in the A-main and took the checkered flag in the seventh position.

After a grueling two weeks on the road, Francis and company will move on to the Deer Creek Speedway in Minnesota today [June 6] and then to the legendary Eldora Speedwa in Ohio for "The Dream" this Friday and Saturday. "The Dream" offers a $100,000 purse for the winning team. Francis is currently ranked 12th in World of Outlaws Late Model Series points.
