A look at the NASCAR Elite Division, International Truck and Engine Corporation Midwest Series Top 10 drivers

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (May 19, 2003) -- The following is a glance at the NASCAR Elite Division, International Truck and Engine Corporation Midwest Series Top 10 in the championship heading into the All-Star 150 at Grundy County Speedway, in Morris, Illinois, May 17. This will be race 3 of 12 on the NASCAR International Truck and Engine Corporation Midwest Series schedule:

No. 1 -- Ron Breese, Jr (No. 01 EWT, Inc. Chevrolet), RBR, Inc. Last week's ranking: No. 2. After a 5th place run at Wisconsin Dells Motor Speedway, Breese finds himself atop the standings for the first time in over four years. He has finished 3rd in the final points on two occasions. This may be his best chance yet to capture his first NASCAR championship.

No. 2 -- Eric Fransen (No. 16 Sonya's Rose Chevrolet), Dan and Sonya DelCamp Racing. Last week's ranking: No. 4. The rookie continues to impress with a 3rd place run at the Dells. Not only does Fransen lead the Victory Circle Chassis Rookie of the Year standings, he sits 2nd in the championship run down. His biggest challenge lies ahead, however, as the next two events are at tracks he's never seen.

No. 3 -- Steve Carlson (No. 66 Lefthander Chassis Chevrolet), Carlson Motorsports. Last week's ranking: No. 1. An uncharacteristically poor finish at the Dells (9th) bumped Carlson from last week's top spot. He's only seven points out of the No. 1 spot. Carlson was steaming mad after his sour performance at the Dells and that may not bode well for the competition as the Midwest Series travels to Grundy County, a track Carlson has 5 wins at.

No. 4 -- Tim Schendel (No. 21 Mathews Archery Chevrolet), Iron Eagle Racing. Last week's ranking: No. 5. You can tell the 24-year old Schendel is maturing as a driver because he is very quietly posting good run after good run. You hardly notice Schendel is there, and then you look up and he's 4th in the standings. He grew up a few miles down the road from Carlson, has watched him win for years and has apparently learned something from the eight-time Midwest Series champion.

No. 5 -- Justin Diercks (No. 29 Adrian Carriers Chevrolet), Steve and Lisa Diercks Motorsports. Last week's ranking: No. 3. Diercks struggled at the Dells with handling and slipped two spots to No. 5 in this weeks Midwest Series Top-10. Like Schendel, Diercks has matured as a driver. Justin and his dad, Steve, have assembled a team that is certainly a contender for the Midwest Series title.

No. 6 -- Eddie Hoffman (No. 8 Lisa Thomas Salon Chevrolet), TK Racing. Last week's ranking: N/A. His win at the Dells propelled Hoffman from 19th in the championship standings to 6th. After mechanical woes cost him a good run at the opener, Hoffman stated he was no longer points racing, but instead racing for wins. The Midwest Series now travels to his home track, Grundy County Speedway, a track Hoffman has two series wins at. The rest of the field could be in for a long night at Grundy.

No. 7 -- Jeremy Lepak (No. 45 U.S. Navy Chevrolet), Dave Stammer Racing. Last week's ranking: N/A. Lepak finished 4th at the Dells and matched his career best series showing. A Victory Circle Chassis Rookie of the Year contender, Lepak makes his first appearance in the Midwest Series Top-10. Like his rookie counter-part Fransen, the series now takes Lepak to tracks he's never seen before.

No. 8 -- Ryan Hanson (No. 60 Prairie Avenue Concrete Ford), Hanson Motorsports. Last week's ranking: N/A. Hanson was the Bud Pole fast qualifier at the Dells. He backed it up with a 7th place finish in the race and makes his first appearance in the Midwest Series Top-10. Hanson is in his 3rd full season of Midwest Series competition and looks to improve on his 9th place point run of a year ago.

No. 9 -- Jeff Way (No. 68 Wauwatosa Savings Chevrolet), Blakely Racing. Last week's ranking: No. 6. After a 6th place run at the season opener, Way slipped a little at the Dells and came home 14th. Still, Way is one of only six drivers to complete all the laps in 2003. Way is in just his second year of Midwest Series action and just his 3rd year behind the wheel of a late model.

No. 10 -- Brian Hoppe (No. 51 Gildan Activewear Chevrolet), Star Motorsports. Last week's ranking: N/A. Hoppe, a serious championship contender, had a disastrous start to the 2003 campaign and found himself 22nd in points after one event. He rebounded with a 2nd place run at the Dells and finds himself in the Midwest Series Top-10. Hoppe is 6th on the series all-time win list, but second, behind Carlson, among active drivers.
