It will be a busy weekend for three NASCAR Touring Series divisions throughout the eastern United States and Spain.
NASCAR Whelen Euro Series
NASCAR’s only European-based series kicks off its sixth season — with the sanctioning body — and ninth overall with an expected 28-car field featuring drivers from 15 countries scheduled to participate.
Among the countries represented include Poland, Luxembourg, Iran, Japan and Venezuela.
Anthony Kumpen enters the season as the defending NWES champion. He begins his quest for a third title to tie Ander Vilarino for the most in the series’ history.
Vilarino leads all drivers with four wins at Spain’s Circuit Ricardo Tormo. As the case with every race weekend on the 2017 schedule, both Elite 1 and Elite 2 divisions will hold doubleheaders with the first race set for Saturday afternoon and the second doubleheader slated for Sunday afternoon.

Whelen Modifieds try again at Thompson
After bad weather forced the track and NASCAR to postpone the Icebreaker 150 last weekend, the competitors return to try again this weekend with qualifying scheduled for Saturday and the 43rd running of the race set for Sunday afternoon.
This will be the 135th NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race the track has hosted — the most of any track in the history of the series. Justin Bonsignore is looking for his third-consecutive win dating back to last season.
Timmy Solomito hopes to score his second win of the season after taking the checkered flag at Myrtle Beach Speedway last month.
Defending series champion Doug Coby, who’s tied with Bonsignore for most wins among active drivers at Thompson with five, will try and score his first win of the season as he continues his quest for his third straight title and fourth overall.
K&N East gets back on the track
After taking nearly two months off since its season opener in Florida, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East returns to action this weekend at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. The Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 will be the lone visit to the Palmetto State this season.
Kyle Benjamin, from nearby Easley, S.C., will attempt to join Darrell Wallace Jr., as the only two-time winner of this race at GPS. He won here in 2016. Joe Gibbs Racing announced earlier this week that Benjamin make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut with the organization later this season.
Winning a K&N Pro Series East race at GPS has proven to be a good omen for young drivers looking to move up the NASCAR ladder. Current Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers Joey Logano, Austin Dillon and Corey LaJoie all won at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.
NASCAR Xfinity drivers Wallace, William Byron, Justin Haley and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers Brett Moffitt, Ben Rhodes and Austin Hill have also scored NASCAR Touring Series wins at the track before moving up to one of the NASCAR national series.
Also slated to compete will be Todd Gilliland, who has already scored three wins in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West action in search of his second straight title. The race is scheduled for Saturday night.
