Bailey Takes Home Win In Season Opener At ODS

Jack Bailey from Stafford Va., the driver many feel will be the 2005 track champion at the Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, made a statement Saturday night by dominating the BG Products / NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Model Stock Car 100 lap feature. Bailey took over the lead on lap 20, and never looked back, holding off Richard Boswell Jr. and the conclusion.

The pleasant evening started out with qualifying, which was led by John Gunter, who turned the famed 3/8-mile speedway in 15.446 seconds (87.401 MPH) in his New-Cut Construction Chevy. Bailey was just a tick slower in his Century 21 Ford with a lap of 15.458 (87.333 MPH). Third quickest was Nathan Buttke from Randleman NC. His lap of 15.469 (87.271 MPH) was just quick enough to beat out the 2001 ODS Late Model track champ Dustin Storm (15.619, 86.433 MPH). Rounding out the top six drivers were Franklin Butler and Bruce Stachitas. These six drivers set the field for the Manassas Dodge Dash For The Cash. They would be inverted, putting Stachitas and Butler on the front row. The 10-lap event would eventually be won by Butler, who held off Buttke for the win. The final rundown, which set the field for the 100-lap event, was Butler, Buttke, Stachitas, Bailey, Storm, and Gunter.

When the green dropped, Buttke showed the strength in his Pontiac and led the charge into turn one with Butler close behind. But just a few laps later, Butler bobbled a bit and was passed by Bailey and a host of others, setting him back to seventh. Bailey then showed the strength of his Ford, and took over the top spot from Buttke on lap 20, a spot he would never give up. The most impressive run of the night was put in by Richard Boswell Jr. Boswell, who started seventh, made his way methodically through the field, passing cars virtually at will on the inside and the outside. He was able to just about catch Bailey at the end, but ran out of laps and settled for second. Rounding out the top five were Gunter, Buttke, Storm, and Stachitas. The MARF Hard-Charger Award went to Mike Southard in the Try-It-Racing Chevy, as he started from the 15th spot, and finished 8th, moving up seven spots.

The Redman Fleet Service Grand Stocks opened up their 2005 season with a full field of cars. The 50-lap event was won by veteran Chris Donnelly, who dominated the event after taking over the lead from early leader Robert Bruce. The event was marred by a spectacular incident on the back straight, which sent former Mini Modified driver Sean Ballantine over the guardrail and outside the track entering turn three. Ballantine was uninjured, but the car was pretty well used up.

Other arcing action for the night featured the Mini Modifieds in a 30-lap event, won by Ken Datesman from Arlington Va. Bobby Able came home second, followed by Edward Hugill. Billy Morris led flag to flag, beating Thomas Stivason to the stripe in the special 50-lap event for the Rolling Thunder Modifieds. The BDE Racing Series Mini Cups and Pro Trucks were also on the schedule, with Mike Boer holding off Robbie Kendall for the win in the Mini Cup 20-lap feature, while former Old Dominion Speedway Late Model driver Al Dailey picked up the win in the Pro Truck 15-lap feature.

Next Saturday night, the Late Models and the Grand Stocks are scheduled for 100-lap features. Also on the schedule is a special 50-lap feature for the Mini Modifieds, with a 25-lap event for the Winning Edge Performance and Graphics Speedway Sportsman. Practice begins at 2 PM, with qualifying set for 4 PM, and racing action set to take the green at 7 PM.
