Triumphant Return To ODS For Danny Fair

It was the wiley veteran versus the young gun, the old versus the new. Call it what you want, but what resulted was one of the best races in a long time at the famed 3/8-mile oval. Danny Fair, the 5-time track champion returned to the Old Dominion for the first time in 2005, put on a driving clinic that will not be forgotten any time soon, and picked up the win in the NASCAR 200 for the B/G Product NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Model Stock Cars.

On the perfect night for racing, Lindsay Chevrolet Qualifying was led by Bruce Stachitas from Burtonsville Md. in his Orbit Construction Chevy with a quick lap of 15.586 seconds (87.277 mph). Point leader Jack Bailey was second quickest with a 15.535 (86.901 mph) in the Century 21Team Ford. Dustin Storm had a solid third place qualifying effort in his National Air Products Chevy with a lap of 15.561 (86.755 mph), while Fair, Mike Colabucci, and John Gunter rounded out the top six. This put Gunter on the pole for the Manassas Dodge Dash For The Cash, a 10-lap sprint to determine the top six starters for the night's feature. The Dash was easily won by Storm, followed by Colabucci, Gunter, and Fair.

When the green flag fell, it was Storm who darted out in front and seemed to be the class of the field. However, early in the event, he was tangled up in an incident involving some lapped traffic, suffering a bent spindle and ending his night. This gave the lead to Bailey, who held on to the lead until Fair, who had made his way through the field and nudged Bailey on several occasions, took over the top spot on lap 80. Bailey followed Fair until lap 124, when his took advantage of Fair going a bit wide in turn one, taking over the top spot. But Fair was not going to be denied, and made contact with Bailey several more time, finally making the pass for the lead on lap 136. Fair would hold on to that spot for the remainder of the event. Bailey crossed the stripe just behind Fair, followed by Stachitas, Mike Southard, and Nathan Buttke. Both Southard and Buttke had impressive runs as both drivers had to start from the rear of the field. Southard arrived to the track late and did not qualify, while Buttke had problems with his transponder during qualifying, in addition to surviving an early race spin, sending him to the rear of the field for a second time. In victory lane, Fair thanked his crew for getting the car race ready. "That was a great race. The handled great all night long. Jack and I had a tough race tonight" But Bailey saw it a bit different. "If Fair wants to run that way, then so will I." He also made mention of traction control, which is illegal at all NASCAR tracks. "Just go to tractioncontrol.com," he mentioned in his interview. "It was a good points night though," he added. But then he continued his comments concerning Fair. "If Danny (Fair) wants to be the king of Old Dominion Speedway, then so be it. I have bigger and better things in my future."

Chris Donnelly picked up his fourth win in the Redman Fleet Service Grand Stock 100-lap feature. Donnelly took over the lead from Robert Bruce and held on for the win, taking sole possession of first place in the points standings. Donnelly, Bruce, and Mark Miller had entered the night tied for the top spot. Following Donnelly and Bruce across the stripe was Michael Hardin, T.J. Henderson, and Scott Quesenberry. Scott Roux picked up his first ever feature win in the 30-lap Mini Modified event, beating Mike carte to the stripe by less than 3 car lengths. The win gives Roux sole possession of first place in the points chase, as he and Carte came in tied for the lead. Bill Briggs came home third, while Jeff Haase and Michael Troiano rounded out the top five. The MARF Hard Charger Award courtesy of McGee Crane Rental and Convenience Care Care, went to Scott Quesenberry, as he started from the 16th spot and finished 5th. The BDE Racing Series were also on the schedule Saturday night, and Mike Boer dominated the 20-lap event for the Mini Cups. In the Pro Truck division, Danielle McDermott survived a last lap crash to take home the win after she, Al Dailey, and Davey Callihan tangled in turn four on the final lap.

Next Saturday night, the Allison Legacy Series makes it's ever first trip to the Old Dominion Speedway. Also on the schedule is a 100-lap feature for the Late Models, twin 50-lap features for the Grand Stocks, and a special 50-lap Mini Modified feature. Practice begins at 2 PM, qualifying is set for 4 PM, with racing taking the green flag at 7 PM.
