Strader escapes injury after devastating crash.
ROUGEMONT, NC (April 29, 2002) - Reigning NASCAR Goody's Dash Series Champion, Cam Strader was not injured when he was involved in a crash at the Orange County Speedway last Saturday night.
While working lap 80, Strader went low in turn three to pass Kelly Sutton.
As the two entered the front stretch Strader's car washed up the track and caught the right front of Sutton's machine. Strader's car turned hard right straight into the wall. His left side tires grabbed the track and caused his car to begin barrel rolling. He flipped six times and then landed on his wheels. Strader and Sutton both climbed from their cars without injury. "My Wesson Cooking Oil / Peter Pan Mercury was a really good car tonight. I was being too aggressive trying to pass Kelly. She had a good car and was running well. I feel bad for both of us," Strader commented. (Strader and Sutton are teammates.)
"That's the first time I've ever been on my head," Strader commented. It just goes to show that you don't have to be racing at Daytona or Talledega to take a wide ride. I'm just glad that no one was injured, and that NASCAR has done such a great job making these cars safe. The safety issue with NASCAR has always been paramount, and after you take a ride like I just did, you learn to appreciate their efforts to keep us safe."
Justin Hobgood made a heads up move as his brother Jake Hobgood and David Hutto tangled on the last lap. As they entered the front stretch for the last time Justin's momentum carried him alongside his brother Jake and he literally beat him by a whisker at the line. David Hutto came to the line in third, with Zach Brewer, and Robert Huffman rounding out the top five. The next race for the Series will be held at the Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, VA on Saturday, May 11, 2002.
