South Boston and Virginia Hall of Fame banquet notes

Hall of Fame Inductions draw acclaim at Awards Banquet.

(South Boston, VA) The inaugural inductions for the Virginia Motorsports Hall of Fame headlined a gala night for Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway, as fans and friends gathered at the World of Sports Complex.

With their families assembled, Ray Hendrick and Wendell Scott were memorialized for their contributions to the racing history of Virginia.

They became the first inductees to have their names forever immortalized. Winston Cup car owner Junie Donlavey and Speedway President Joe Mattioli presented members of both families with plaques representing the men and their efforts for furthering a rich, racing heritage. America's Hometown Track also recognized the achievements of its hometrack faithful, by crowning the champions in all NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge divisions.

Frank Deiny Jr. of Mechanicsville, VA accepted the Textilease Late Model Stock Car trophy and a host of others awards including a $5,000.00 bonus from the Textilease Super Fund. Bill Moshenek of Providence, NC accepted with teary eyes his championship awards for the Limited Sportsman Division, while Jesse "Doodle" Lang took home the top award in Super Stocks. Augie Saccoccio of Durham, NC, with body cast and all, (from a recent back surgery) accepted his championship jacket and cap after a heartfelt thanks to his wife and crew. Saccoccio successfully defended his 2001 Championship and again captured the Pure Stock 4 title in 2002.

NASCAR awarded $9,290.74 in track points funds to be distributed among the Top 20 drivers in the Late Model and Limited Sportsman Divisions. More than $35,000.00 in prize fund and contingency awards were given in total on this special night of recognition.
