Herring doesn't start up front, but 17-year-old winds up with Late Model victory Saturday night at SoBo after all

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. -- Sometimes starting on the front row isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Seventeen-year-old Drew Herring of Benson, N.C. proved that Saturday night at South Boston Speedway in the 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division.

Herring qualified fifth in the 21-car field for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series event and started from the third row, but had inherited the lead position after only the third circuit. That transpired after two early caution periods, which were accompanied by one red flag session, had the top three qualifiers reeling back in the pack.

When the race went green on lap eight, Herring owned the first-place slot, which he would never relinquish. Ironically, only one other caution flag slowed the field. The final 127 laps of the race were run under the green flag.

The victory was Herring's third of the season and enabled him to continue to sit atop the track's Late Model Stock Car point standings. Sellers, a four-time winner this season, sits second in the standings.

Sellers started the race outside on the front row, alongside pole position winner Ryan Rhodes of Sanford, N.C., who reeled off a time trial run of 15.630 seconds on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

Rhodes and Sellers got together on the first circuit of the race bringing out the initial caution flag. On a complete restart, Sellers and Owen Miller of Emporia, Va., who occupied the pole position for the second restart, smacked together in the frontstretch bringing out another yellow flag. That collision, which resulted in a red-flag period, also collected Brandon Butler of Chesapeake, Va., who entered the night third in the point race, and Barry Beggarly of Pelham, N.C.

The only other caution of the night took place on lap 20. When the race went back under the green flag on lap 24, Herring was able to motor caution-free to the checkered flag.

Herring, however, couldn't drive worry-free to the victory. Scott Worley of Altavista, Va. drove a high line late in the race and challenged Herring for the lead on several occasions. Worley wound up with a second-place run, over one-half lap ahead of third-place finishing Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C.

David Triplett, Jr. of Durham, N.C. grabbed a fourth-place finish in the field, while Rhodes rallied back to secure a fifth-place finish.

Jason Dickerson of Ruckersville, Va. placed sixth in the event and was the final driver on the lead lap. Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. took the seventh place slot for the night, while Sellers was eighth. Cook and Sellers were each one lap down at the close of the race.

Eric Almirola of Mooresville, N.C. and Ronald Hill of Rougemont, N.C. finished ninth and 10th, respectively for the night. Almirola and Hill were also one lap down at the checkered flag.

Snow notches third Limited Sportsman victory, snaps three-race win streak by Bailey

Justin Snow of Danville, Va. brought a three-race win streak by Jonathan Bailey of Keysville, Va. to an end with a triumph in the 50-lap race for the Limited Sportsman Division Saturday night.

Drivers in the 16-car field started on points after rain earlier in the day washed out qualifying. Bailey started from the pole position and Snow started third, but surged to the lead on the ninth circuit with a pass of Bailey.

Once Snow secured the lead spot on the track, he held off several challenges from Bailey to receive the checkered flag first in the race that was slowed by four caution periods.

The win was the third of the season for Snow and allowed him to move into second place in the division point standings, just behind three-time winner Bailey.

Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. entered the race second in the title chase, but had to pit early and wound up with a 14th-place run.

Brian Pembleton of Amelia, Va. finished third in the event, while Andrew Perry of Hillsborough, N.C. was fourth and Charles Barnes of Chase City, Va. rounded out the top five competitors.

The sixth through 10th-place positions in the field were claimed by Billy Myers of Hurt, Va., Kenny Bowes of Danville, Va., Timmy Hogan of Rocky Mount, Va., Timmy Langford of Amelia, Va. and Brian Cole of Roxboro, N.C.

Jack Milam picks up win in caution-filled Grand Sportsman event

Jack Milam of Keeling, Va. swiped the lead from Brad Matthews of Stovall, N.C. on the eighth circuit and led the rest of the way to score a victory in the 30-lap race for the Grand Sportsman Division.

Matthews wound up second in the 13-car field, while Jeremy Ratliff of South Boston, Va. was third. Mickey Cassidy of Danville, Va. earned a fourth-place run in the race that was slowed by six cautions, while Tommy Chandler of Providence, N.C. rounded out the top five competitors.

Matthews entered the night tied with Keith Edwards of Pendleton, N.C. for the division point lead. The two started on the front row, made contact early and Edwards later left the race with rear end problems, allowing Matthews to gain control of the point race.

Smith leads flag-to-flag in 25-lap Southern Vintage Modified race

Randy Smith had little trouble rolling to a victory in the 25-lap race for the touring Southern Vintage Modified drivers.

Smith started from the pole and led every lap to secure the victory. He was followed across the finish line by outside pole sitter Darryl Lacks, who stayed in the second-place position throughout the race.

Donnie Lacks was third in the seven-car field, while Benny Franklin rounded out the top four performers in the field.

The winner in the Limited Modified category was Sonny Arthur.

A.J. Davis wins lengthy 25-lap race for Ford Focus Midget Series

A.J. Davis of Spartanburg, S.C. claimed first place in the 25-lap race for the touring Virginia-Carolina Ford Focus Midget Series competitors.

Nick Wean of Milford, N.J. wound up with a second-place showing in the 18-car field, while Michael Sboro of Mooresville, N.C. was third and Gary Winters of Salisbury. N.C. rounded out the top four competitors.

Several cautions slowed the field including one yellow flag session that stalled the field for nearly 30 minutes with only three laps left to complete.
