Peters edges Hamlin and Howard to checkered flag in thrilling Late Model finish at South Boston

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. -- Wow! The final four circuits of the 150-lap NASCAR Dodge Pepsi Late Model Stock Car Division race proved to be a three-wide, three-way, crowd-pleasing shootout Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

The event was the featured attraction of the Dad's Night Out presented by Sprint, NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing program.

The race went green after the event's third caution period with only four laps remaining. At that point, Timothy Peters of Providence, N.C. was sitting in third place, behind race leader Woody Howard of Chesapeake, Va. and Denny Hamlin of Midlothian, Va.

As the green flag dropped, Hamlin bumped into the back of Howard, causing his tires to spin. That enabled Peters to make a bold move to the outside and then around the two frontrunners.

Peters then held off a three-way surge over the closing two laps to record his second victory of the season. The win also enabled Peters to add two points to his advantage over Hamlin in the division's points chase. The current lead for Peters is now 14 points.

Hamlin nosed past Howard at the finish line to grab the second-place spot. Howard placed third and was followed in the top five by T.J. Majors of Mooresville, N.C. in the fourth-place spot and Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. in the fifth position.

Rounding out the lead-lap cars in the 18-car field were Richard Landreth of Pine Hall, N.C. in sixth, Eddie Johnson of Ashland, Va. in seventh and Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. in the eighth position.

Jimmy Mullins of Collinsville, Va. was ninth and Scott Worley of Long Island, Va. rounded out the top 10 drivers in the field. Both were one lap down at the end.

Hamlin owned the pole position for the start of the race, however, he was black-flagged at the outset of the event for jumping the restart and was penalized with a stop-and-go penalty.

Despite the penalty, Hamlin managed to stay on the lead lap and battle into the top four by lap 92. He was third one lap later and into second place on lap 100.

The first caution of the event came out on lap 66 for debris on the track. The second yellow flag, which wound up turning into a red-flag stoppage, took place on the 134th circuit when Clay Campbell of Martinsville, Va. smacked the inside retaining wall coming out of turn two.

The third and final caution, which set up the four-lap shootout to the finish line, came out on lap 142 when Bruce Driver of Emporia, Va. went spinning in the backstretch.

Snow doesn't melt after grabbing lead position early on in the Barkhouser Limited Sportsman Division race

Justin Snow of Danville, Va. no longer has to wonder when his next win will come.

After going two seasons without reaching Victory Lane, Snow scored a win Saturday in the 50-lap race for the Barkhouser Limited Sportsman Division.

Snow grabbed the lead from top qualifier Jonathan Cash of Oxford on the second circuit and was never headed after that.

Cash wound up heading to the pits after 17 laps when he encountered mechanical problems.

Jonathan Bailey of Keysville, Va., who owns a commanding lead in the division's points standings, finished second in the 17-car field.

Josh Oakley of Rougemont, N.C. placed third behind Bailey in the final rundown, marking his third straight run in the top four at South Boston Speedway.

Wayne Roach of Chatham, Va. grabbed the fourth-place spot in the field and was followed in the top five by Chuck Lawson of Providence, Va.

Brian Cole of Roxboro, N.C. finished sixth in the event, while Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. was seventh. Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. finished eighth and was the final driver on the lead lap.

Bill Moshenek of Providence, N.C. placed ninth and Charles Barnes of Chase City, Va. rounded out the top 10 drivers.

Steve Womble's first race at South Boston this season results in Applebee's Pure Stock Division triumph

Steve Womble of Mebane, N.C. made good on his first visit to South Boston Speedway collecting a victory Saturday night in the 30-lap Applebee's Pure Stock Division race.

Womble started from the pole position, led the first 20 laps and the final eight circuits to score the win.

Tommy Wooldridge of Forest, Va. took the lead on a restart following the second of three caution periods, but lost it when the race went green after the third yellow-flag session.

Donald Glass of Halifax, Va. finished third in the field, driving in a back-up car, and held on to a two-point edge over Wooldridge in the division's points standings.

Billy Goble of Ringgold, Va., who was also driving a back-up car, collected a fourth-place finish in the 15-car field and was followed in the top five by Scott Phillips of Virgilina, Va.

Jack Milam leads wire-to-wire in 30-lap race to score his second consecutive victory in the Grand Stock Division

Jack Milam of Keeling, Va. started from the pole position and led every lap on the way to scoring his second consecutive triumph in the 30-lap event for the Grand Stock Division.

Wayne Wilson placed second in the 12-car field and was followed by Tony Hurley, Jr. of Durham. Hurley started 11th and rallied for the top-three run in his initial Grand Stock Division race at South Boston.

Troy Dowdy of Lynchburg, Va. was fourth and maintained his lead in the points race for the division, while Junior Hancock of Danville, Va. rounded out the top five competitors.

Mark Slye scoots to Rolling Thunder Modified win

Mark Slye of Toano, Va. took the lead on the first lap and led all the way to the checkered flag to win the 50-lap race for the touring Rolling Thunder Modified Series.

Thomas Stinson of Chester, Va. overcame an early mishap to battle back through the pack and gain a runner-up finish.

Kevin Eby of Lenoir, N.C. placed third in the 20-car field.

Rick Newson scores East Coast Flatheads triumph

Rick Newsom of Pfafttown, N.C. motored to the front on the 11th circuit of the 20-lap race for the touring East Coast Flatheads Series and stayed there the rest of the way.

Bill Blair of Thomasville, N.C. finished second in the 13-car field, while James Rogers of Ridgeway, Va. placed third and was the final driver on the lead lap.

ARCA RE/MAX Series 200 set to get the green flag at South Boston Speedway on Saturday night, June 26

Following a one-week break, South Boston Speedway will roar back to action on Saturday, June 26.

On that night, the four-tenths mile asphalt oval will host the ARCA Re/MAX Series 200 event. Also scheduled on June 26, will be a 110-lap race for the drivers in the NASCAR Dodge Pepsi Late Model Stock Car Division.

As a prelude to the July 4, holiday, South Boston Speedway will also host a fireworks show as part of the June 26, racing event.

The ARCA RE/MAX Series will get the green flag at 8 p.m. and will be televised live on the Speed Channel. The NASCAR Dodge Pepsi Late Model Stock Car Division race will get underway at approximately 10 p.m. and will be followed by the fireworks show.

Grandstand gates will open June 26, at 2 p.m. Qualifying for the ARCA RE/MAX Series will start at 3 p.m., while time trials for the NASCAR Dodge Pepsi Late Model Stock Car Division will get underway at 4:30 p.m.

Reserved seats for June 26, are available for $30. Advance adult general admission tickets, available at the South Boston Speedway office, will be priced at $15 until 5 p.m. on Friday, June 25. On race day, adult general admission tickets will be priced at $20.

Youth, ages 10-15, will be admitted for $10 and children, ages nine and under, will be admitted free with a paid adult.
