June 13, 2000 (Palmdale, Calif.) - Sean Woodside and REF Motorsports searched long and hard for the combination they needed to run competitively on Rocky Mountain Raceway's 3/8-mile oval in last Saturday's Snap-On 125.
Dissatisfied with their first practice times, they made several changes to the setup following the first practice session, allowing them to run times a full two-tenths of a second faster during the second practice. Better, but not quite what they were looking for.
After qualifying with a 21st place time, it looked for awhile as though the team would have to settle for keeping out of trouble and finishing in a position that would allow them to maintain their top-five position in the Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring point standings.
This particular car, though, seems to learn how to behave itself once the racing starts.
Woodside picked off positions and threaded his way between wrecked cars until he had worked his way into an 11th place position late in the 125-lap race. After the final restart for what was to be a green-white-checkered finish, Woodside took two more positions and brought the #4 REF Motorsports Pontiac to a 9th place finish.
"This is how it's been for us the past few races," commented Woodside. "Struggle to get the car fast, don't qualify that well, but the car does well in competition. We were satisfied with the 9th place finish." Woodside maintained a 5th place point position for the year to date, and increased his top ten finishes to three.
The next race on the Featherlite Southwest Series schedule will be at Sears Point Raceway on June 24, 2000.
