Greg Voigt finishes second at Tucson
Gains Ground in Southwest Series Standings
GOLETA, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2004) -- The mood around the garage at Voigt Motorsports resembles a cheshire cat convention because there are smiles everywhere.
Greg Voigt's second-place finish in the Star Nursery.com 150 at Tucson Raceway Park was his best career finish in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division Southwest Series. It moved him to sixth place in the series standings with one race remaining in the 2004 season and puts him in a strong position to make the field in the Toyota All-Star Shootout at Irwindale Speedway in November.
"My team has worked so hard this season to get us into this position," Voigt said. "It's a great feeling, but we can't think too much about it because we have to finish preparing for Phoenix."
Voigt and his Chevrolet will compete at Phoenix International Raceway Nov. 4. The series will share the famed one-mile oval with NASCAR's three biggest series, the Craftsman Truck Series, the Busch Series and the Nextel Cup Series.
Unofficially, Voigt sits 60 points behind fifth-place Eric Holmes in the standings. The first 10 finishers in the final Series standings earn automatic berths in the Shootout, something Voigt has aimed at all season. The Shootout pits the top 10 finishers in the four NASCAR Elite Division series against each other.
"I need to thank the folks that have helped us," Voigt said. "That includes Auto Pro Racing Engines, STR Chassis, Custom Printing, JN Design and Smitty's Towing."
At Tucson, Voigt started 16th and steadily moved toward the front through the 150-lap race around the high-banked, 3/8-mile TRP oval. Jim Petit, II won the race, just .103 of a second ahead of Voigt. Voigt had never raced at Tucson before.
"We're going to win one of these things," Voigt said. "Maybe we'll win at Phoenix."
Greg Voigt has won track and regional championships on asphalt and dirt tracks around the Southwestern states. Voigt's engine builder is James Weston of Auto Pro Racing Engines.
