LAS VEGAS - Troy Adams, the only African-American driver competing in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series, is one of 41 competitors scheduled to race in this Sunday's StarNursery.com 250 at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

At 32, Adams, of Riverside, Calif., is the third African-American ever to compete in the Southwest Series. Willy T. Ribbs, who drove in the 1998 Los Angeles street race, and Tim Woods III - now a full-time NASCAR Winston West driver - were the first and second drivers respectively.

Adams has an impressive 24 years of racing experience, beginning with Go-Karts at the age of eight. He also has raced Speed Trucks and Late Models. Adams' first opportunity to drive a Southwest Series car came in 2000, and he is now competing full-time for rookie-of-the-year honors.

"I never expected to be in this position," Adams said, "but here I am with one of the great opportunities in motor sports. It's like a wish list suddenly became my life."

Adams' CBA Motorsports Chevrolet is owned by Clarence J. Broussard of Sylmar, Calif. Broussard was referred to Adams by off-road racing legend Walker Evans.

Adams graduated from Cal State San Bernardino and is highly involved in the family business, Adams Kart Track, in Riverside, Calif. He started the Speed Zone Racing School at the track in 1992 and also has worked for the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Walt Disney World in Orlando Fla.

NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Grand American Modifieds (30-lap feature) and the Ultra Wheels Super Trucks (75-lap feature) also are scheduled to race on Sunday.

The StarNursery.com 250 marks the first of two visits for the Southwest Series to LVMS this season. The series also will return to LVMS on Oct. 13 for a 100-mile race on the 1.5-mile superspeedway.

Spectator gates open at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Racing begins at 10:30 a.m. and the Southwest Series main event is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Admission is $18 adults, $15 senior/military, $5 children six through 12 and children 5 and under are free. Tickets are available at the gate or through the LVMS ticket office at (800) 644-4444.
