Duncan Takes NASCAR West Title By Narrow Margin

IRWINDALE, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2004) -- Austin Cameron won the NAPA Auto Parts 150 at Irwindale Speedway, but Mike Duncan finished ninth and won the 2004 NASCAR Grand National Division West Series championship.

Goodyear is the exclusive tire provider for NASCAR's Grand National Division, which also includes the Busch North Series. The tires supplied for the NAPA 150 were the same tire codes that will be used in the Grand National Division's portion of the Toyota All-Star Shootout in November. The top drivers from both the Busch North and West series earn berths in the Shootout.

Duncan beat Cameron for the 2004 title by 16 points after falling 14 points short in 2003. Cameron started the race knowing his best chance to win the championship came if he won the race and troubles befell Duncan. Cameron did his part by winning the race but Duncan finished well enough to secure the title.

Cameron's victory was his fifth of the season. Duncan won only once, but finished in the top 10 in every race.

Cameron beat Busch North star Dale Quarterly to the finish by just .583 of a second. The field had to run two extra laps so the scheduled 150-lap race could finish under green-flag conditions.

Brett Thompson finished third, followed by David Gilliland and Scott Gaylord.

Scott Lynch, the defending series champion, won the Bud Pole Award with a lap averaging 98.582 mph around the half-mile, high-banked Irwindale oval.

The starting field represented four nations (United States, Japan, Mexico and Canada), two series (West and Busch North) and seven states. Three cars did not qualify for the 26-car starting field.
