PHOENIX, Ariz. (Feb. 1, 2005) -- David Gilliland beat an impressive field to win the 2005 season opener for the NASCAR Grand National Division West Series at Phoenix International Raceway.
Goodyear is the exclusive tire supplier for the Grand National Division, which includes the Busch North Series.
The race was part of the Copper World Classic, the traditional winter racing event.
Kevin Harvick, the NASCAR Nextel Cup star who won the West Series title in 1998, led the first 77 laps of the 100-lap race. Harvick lost the lead when he pitted to add fuel. Sarah Fisher, the Indy Racing League star, finished 20th.
Gilliland led the final 33 laps of the race. He averaged 108.532 mph on his way to the victory. He started on the pole after a run averaging 127.461 mph around the mile oval.
Mike Duncan finished second, followed by Jason Jefferson, Mike David and Brandon Ash.
The race was slowed by just one caution period.
