EKSTROM LEARNS FROM 'CRASH' COURSE AT INFINEON

His stock car debut lasted all of 11 laps, but Mattias Ekstrom walked away from Saturday's NASCAR K&#N Pro Series West race with an idea of what it's like when Infineon Raceway's full of traffic.

"This race was a good experience for me for as long as it lasted. It was helpful to experience the start of the race, to drive around the course and see what happens following cars closely," said Ekstrom, who'll start 38th in the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota in Sunday's Sprint Cup race. "Unfortunately the day ended early for us, but I do think I learned some things that will help in the Cup race. I really appreciate how hard this team has worked all weekend and the opportunity that was given to me to race today."

A Red Bull driver and two-time touring car champion from Sweden, Ekstrom started 11th in the No. 84 Red Bull Toyota. As the field approached right- hand turn three on lap 12, Ekstrom, running 10th, slid off course and tagged the outside barrier. With left-front damage, the car was towed to Infineon's drag strip in the center of the road course. But that's no man's land, and the crew couldn't get to the car. Day done in 36th.

"I turned right, and the car went left," Ekstrom said.

Red Bull Racing Team development driver Cole Whitt will return to the No. 84 for Friday's K&N East race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Whitt ranks third in the East standings - 46 points off the lead - entering the season's fifth event.

New England 125, Friday, June 25, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Loudon, N.H.
