PHOENIX (March 18, 2000) Plans for all short track NASCAR Winston West Series races in the NASCAR 2000 season to be televised to a national audience were announced Saturday by NASCAR officials at Phoenix International Raceway, site of the season-opening NAPA Auto Parts 100. The eight short track events on the NASCAR 2000 schedule are to air on the Speedvision cable network. The expanded television coverage is the most extensive in the 46-year history of the series.

Speedvision -- a 24-hour cable network devoted to comprehensive coverage of the automotive, motorcycle, aviation and marine industries -- plans to air the races in prime time on a tape-delay basis.

In addition to the events on Speedvision, the NASCAR Winston West Series race at California Speedway is scheduled to air on the ESPN2 cable network.

"We are pleased to announce that these NASCAR Winston West Series events will be televised to a national audience," said Tom Deery, NASCAR vice president. "The series has entered a new era and this TV package is a major part of that step forward. This is a move that will add fuel to the development of the series as we head into the new millennium.

"In addition to its growth in recent seasons, the series has experienced an increased level of competition. This television coverage will allow fans across the country an opportunity to view the intense competition in the series. And it will allow these drivers to showcase their talent to a national audience, while providing tremendous added exposure to the teams and their sponsors."

The eight short track races on the NASCAR Winston West Series schedule include three visits by the series to Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway; two visits to Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.; as well as stops at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash.; Portland (Ore.) Speedway and Rocky Mountain Raceways near Salt Lake City, Utah.

The NASCAR Winston West Series, which experienced a record year in 1999 that included nine different race winners, is the West's oldest stock car circuit. The cars raced in the series are virtually the same as those raced in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
