2003 national event schedule announced

CLERMONT, Ind. (Aug. 31, 2002) -- The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) announced its 2003 national event schedule for the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series today at the 48th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The 2003 schedule features 23 national events and a return to all venues on the current 2002 schedule.

NHRA announced a move of the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals in Madison, Ill., to a nighttime race with professional competition on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. In addition, NHRA announced a 15-race Pro Stock Bike schedule for 2003, with the addition of the category at the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals in Memphis. The national event in Madison, Ill. and the Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Denver will be three-day events.

"The 2003 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series national event schedule again represents NHRA's position as the most geographically dispersed motorsports in the United States," said Tom Compton, president, NHRA.

All NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events will be televised, on a live or same-day basis, on ESPN or ESPN2 with a minimum of four hours each weekend. The Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the world's most prestigious drag race, will feature a minimum of 10 hours of television coverage.

NHRA officials also announced that the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' top two categories -- Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car -- will compete in Pomona, Calif., at both the K&N Filters Winternationals and Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, Gainesville, Fla., the spring Las Vegas event, Houston, Atlanta, Englishtown, N.J., Topeka, Kan., Columbus, Ohio, Seattle, Sonoma, Calif., Brainerd, Minn., Indianapolis, Reading, Pa., Chicago (Fall event) and Dallas. Each of these events will be televised on ESPN2.

Pro Stock Bike will compete in 15 events, including Gainesville, Fla., Houston, Atlanta, Englishtown, N.J., the first Chicago event, Columbus, Ohio, St. Louis, Denver, Sonoma, Brainerd, Minn., Indianapolis, Reading, Pa., Memphis, Tenn., the second Las Vegas event and the second Pomona event.

The specialty race schedule will include the King Demon Crown for Pro Stock which will be held at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park (Englishtown, N.J.) during the NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals. The K&N Bike Klash, featuring Pro Stock Bike, will remain at Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP) during the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. The Budweiser Shootout for Top Fuel and Funny Car will remain at their current venues (Pomona finale and Indianapolis, respectively).

Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., the NHRA is the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States. It presents 23 national events through its NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. The NHRA has more than 80,000 members nationwide and more than 130 member tracks. The NHRA-sanctioned sportsman and bracket racing series' provide competition opportunities for drivers of all levels. The NHRA develops the stars of tomorrow by offering the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series, NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Street Legal Program. The NHRA also offers the NHRA Castrol GTX Jr. Drag Racing League for youths ages 8 to 17.
