Geoffrion falls in first round at Brainerd

BRAINERD, Minn., Aug. 17, 2003 - Scott Geoffrion never made what he felt was a good run in Hurley Blakeney's Nitro Fish Ford Escort ZX2 during the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway, whether it was in qualifying or eliminations.

"We made a lot of changes before first round because we thought we had an electrical problem and the car still didn't run quicker," Geoffrion said following Sunday's opening round loss to Troy Coughlin. "It was a good run; as good as we could get on the motor in the car. We need more horsepower, and we'll be getting it in time for us to test Tuesday and Wednesday at Indianapolis. Bob Panella, our engine builder, worked all weekend to get our No. 1 motor ready."

Geoffrion qualified 12th for this event with a weekend best of 6.941 seconds at 199.05 mph.

"Normally we are in the top three or four in speed but we were in the mid-to-tail-end of the pack at this race," added Geoffrion.

Coughlin beat Geoffrion with a 6.920 at 199.73 to a 6.977 at 198.61.

Geoffrion remained eighth in NHRA POWERade Series points with 670.
