Capps Phoenix Monday test notes

Capps and Skoal Racing Green Team complete Phoenix test.

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Feb. 9, 2004) -- Veteran Funny Car driver Ron Capps completed his 2004 preseason testing Monday at Firebird International Raceway during the National Time Trials.

After spending Super Bowl weekend in Las Vegas getting acclimated to a new engine and clutch setup, the Skoal Racing green team spent the past four days testing in the Valley of the Sun in preparation for the season-opening Winternationals at historic Pomona Raceway.

On Monday's only attempt for the green Skoal Racing team, Capps powered his John Stewart-tuned Chevy to a run of 4.961 seconds at 302.80 mph, a 2004 testing-best for the team.

"Obviously we are pleased," Capps said. "The car ran a 4.96 in the middle of the day. The track here is still marginal in the middle. We think we've accomplished what we can here at Phoenix.

"Pomona is going to be such a different race track. The track here at Phoenix is nothing like the track will be at the Winternationals. Everything is going great. The guys are really happy with how everything looks. The new Murf McKinney chassis is working great and I'm really pumped up about getting to Pomona and starting the season."

The 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series will kick-off with the 44th running of the K&N Filters Winternationals, Feb. 19-22, at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif. It is the first of 23 races in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
