ALLEN, RAY LEAD WINNERS AT SOUTH SGMP'S LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES EVENT

CECIL, Ga. -- NHRA Southeast division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors have completed the fourth of six races on the division calendar. This weekend's event at South Georgia Motorsports Park kicked off on Friday and concluded today. Despite only having one qualifying pass for the weekend because of rain on Saturday, the winners in both the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car categories turned in their best performances of the season to make it to the winner's circle. In Top Alcohol Dragster, Jacksonville, Fla., resident Artie Allen scored his first win of the year while Keeter Ray, Newport Beach, Calif., led the Top Alcohol Funny Car class for his first win.

Allen, who qualified in the No. 1 spot in the eight-car field, had a bye run in the first round. In the final he outran Peter Gallen of Broomall, Pa., with a 5.782-second, 244.12 mph run to Gallen's 6.047-second, 211.96 mph effort.

Ray qualified in the No. 3 position and in the first round his 6.133-second, 246.12 mph run was enough to get by Bobby Martindale, Glen Allen, Va. In the semis, Ray beat No. 2 qualifier Nick Bastiao, Sacramento, Calif., and in the final he squared off against John Sullivan, Pike Road City, Ala. Ray laid down a 5.757-second pass at 253.85 mph to Sullivan's 6.116-second, 198.44 mph pass.

In Comp Eliminator, Pat Ross, Avon Lake, Ohio, wheeled his '05 Grand Am to the win over defending division champion David Eaton of Merritt Island, Fla. Mike Crutchfield, Montgomery, Ala., took the win in Super Stock, beating Gaylord, Mich., racer Mark Nowicki who was the runner-up at the division's last race in Orlando, Fla. Tom Stevenson, Flowery Branch, Ga., wheeled his way to the Stock Eliminator crown over Brandon Wood, Thomasville, Ga. The Super Comp hardware went to Mark Horton, Millbury, Ohio, who beat Robert Wolcott Jr., McDonough, Ga. Super Gas winner Sergio Santavenia, Boca Raton, Fla., got the win over Palmetto, Ga., resident David Tatum III. Brian Davis, Tucker, Ga., outran Mike Desio, Seminole, Fla., in the Super Street final. Desio scored the win in Orlando. In Top Sportsman, it was Jeffrey Barker, Warner-Robins, Ga., over Joe Roubicek, Westlake Village, Calif., and the Top Dragster win went to Bill Empke, West Palm Beach, Fla., who beat out Michael Rastall, Rainesville, Ala.

Southeast Division racers head will continue the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series in October. They will head to Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., October 3-5. In the meantime, they may compete at out-of-division races to earn points toward divisional and national championships.
