Coughlin brothers crowned champions at Div. 3 Awards Banquet

INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 6) -- Drag racing brothers John and Mike Coughlin accepted their NHRA Division 3 championship trophies at a gala awards banquet Saturday night in Indianapolis. Accompanied by their wives and children with support from racing brothers Jeg and Troy Coughlin and their families, John took possession of the Top Dragster crown and Mike the Top Sportsman title before a packed house of fellow Div. 3 racers.

Additionally, Team JEGS crewmen Greg Cody, Tony Collier, and Rick Rossiter were honored as Div. 3 Sportsman Mechanics of the Year.

"We started the year with a new dragster and everything just came together very quickly for us," John said. "We were really strong all year and this entire JEGS.com team should be very proud of this accomplishment. We won it together.

"It's special to share the stage with Mike and to have Jeg and Troy here with us. Together, the four of us have now won 12 Divisional championships and that's really something for this organization as a whole."

John won three Top Dragster races en route to his title. Top Dragster was contested for the first time in Division 3 in 2007 and also was something new for the 44-year-old veteran racer from Delaware, Ohio. John also made a run at the Div. 3 Super Stock championship, winning the event in Atco, N.J., but he was narrowly edged off the podium in the final weeks of the season.

Mike was in total control of the Top Sportsman category in his JEGS.com Chevrolet Cobalt, winning five races during the season, including the JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals at his home track of National Trail Raceway in Columbus.

"The guys gave me such a great car week-in and week-out," Mike said. "As a driver, your confidence just soars when you know you have a great racecar. You push yourself that much harder because you don't want to be the weak link in the equation.

"This is a great day for Team JEGS and for all our associates back home. We have 350 rabid fans working at JEGS Mail Order and it's a thrill to bring this to them. They were all so supportive of us throughout the year."

The night ended with Mike Coughlin being crowned Division 3 Sportsman Driver of the Year.
