ENNIS, Texas - This weekend at the Texas Motorplex, former NHRA Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells will attempt to repeat his O'Reilly Fall Nationals win here last year during this weekend's Division 4 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event here this weekend.

In the finals of last year's race, Wells cracked into the 5.30 zone with an elapsed time of 5.38 seconds to become only the second Blown Alcohol Dragster in history to do so in his victory over Division 4 and defending event Champion Jay Meyer. Wells, of LeMars, Iowa, hopes to pick up where he left off this weekend in his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" dragster.

"How good we run this weekend will obviously depend on how good the track conditions are," said Wells. "If the track is good, and the weather is good, hopefully we can put it back in the 5.30's again. I'm hoping to run at least 5.40's, but you never know. If the track is good enough, we should run some .30's."

After ending his 2000 season with the win at the Motorplex, Wells has high hopes for the 2001 season. Namely, regaining the Division 5 Championship, which he lost to Bruce Bowler last year. Wells also is looking for a strong national finish.

"We want to get up as high as we can get in the top ten this year," stated Wells. "Everyone wants to be No. 1, and obviously, that's our goal, but that's a lot of other people's goals too. It's going to be tough this year because everyone is stepping up. It's going to be a tough season no matter what we do."

Qualifying begins on Friday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters at 4 p.m., followed by two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to SummitRacing.com's Drag Race Central for day by day updates of the action from the Motorplex.
