ENGLISHTOWN, N. J. -- The "R" word followed the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series to Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. for the 33rd annual NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions. The "R" word -- Rain.
Rain cancelled Friday's second session and delayed Saturday's qualifying.
On Friday, Larry Nance, driving his brand new red Marine Corps Chevy Cavalier in competition for the first time, gave notice that the new car will perform when he was clocked in 6.882 seconds in the opening session of qualifying. That initial pass was good for 14th position on the qualifying grid.
In Saturday's first session, Nance got out of the grove moving left and coasted to an elapsed time (ET) of 13.114 seconds. This dropped the Akron, Ohio driver out of the top 16 qualifiers and into 21st, entering the final qualifying session.
A career best elapsed time (6.847 seconds) and speed (201.99 mph) were not enough to keep Nance in the field in the last qualifying session. With the air quality conducive to quick times, the Pro Stock cars didn't disappoint the fans that braved the cool May temperatures at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
"This car did everything we asked of it in its first competitive outing," said Nance. "Taylor (Lastor) has a good handle on the this Team Marine Cavalier and we feel that we'll be in the mix of those qualifying on a regular basis very soon, possibly as early a our next race in Topeka. I don't want to make any predictions but this Cavalier is already ahead of our old Cutlass, but remember we only have one race under our belt.
I want to thank my team, Taylor Lastor, Harvey Thorla, and Kirk Gisi for all their hard work in getting this car ready for this weekend's race. Without them and engine builder Richard Maskin and chassis builder Jerry Bickel none of this would have been possible."
It's back-to-back weekends, the second of three races in a row, for the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. Larry Nance and the new Team Marines Cavalier now move to Topeka for the NHRA O'Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park. Professional qualifying gets underway on Friday, May 24th, with final eliminations scheduled for Sunday, May 26th.
