RACING KICKS OFF IN FALLON FALLON, Nev. -- Final qualifying is set for this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Top Gun Raceway with Jim Cowan of Dewey, Ariz., on top in Comp Eliminator with an 8.628 second pass in his '04 Cavalier.
RACING KICKS OFF IN FALLON
FALLON, Nev. -- Final qualifying is set for this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Top Gun Raceway with Jim Cowan of Dewey, Ariz., on top in Comp Eliminator with an 8.628 second pass in his '04 Cavalier. Cowan is followed by Ed Sigmon in second with Randy Goff in third.
Cowan, who is coming off a win last month in Fontana, Calif., is joined by Modesto, Calif., runner Steven Wann who leads the Super Stock field in his '70 Barracuda at 10.033 seconds while former NHRA Jr. drag racer Ryan McClanahan of Alta Loma, Calif., is No. 1 in Stock Eliminator. McClanahan ran 10.478 seconds and is followed by Don Wann in second and Boulder City Nev., resident Nick Ariotti third in his '76 Volare. No. 2 in Super Stock is Darren Smith who has put together a string of three straight wins, winning three of the four events this year in the NHRA Pacific Division.
In the division's Sunset Racecraft Top Sportsman series it is J. Wayne Silvia in the No. 1 spot out of Upland, Calif., with a 7.729 second pass at 179.56 mph followed by Joe Roubicek in the No. 2 spot. Del Cox Jr. leads the Hughes Performance Top Dragster category at 7.170 seconds, 190.38 mph. Cox has three final round appearances this year but is still looking for his first win. Roubicek is pulling double duty this weekend and is also qualifier No. 2 in Top Dragster followed by Jimmy Johnson of Santa Rosa, Calif., in third.
Jay Matthews rode his '98 Suzuki to the No. 1 spot in the Sportsman Motorcycle class presented by Harley Davidson with a 0.005 second reaction time. Pete Miclette of Garberville, Calif., is second and Greg Liskey is third out of Salinas, Calif.
Racing continues on Sunday with round 1 of eliminations scheduled for 9 a.m. Gates open at 7 a.m. Tickets are $20. The track is located approximately 15 miles south of Fallon on the west side of Schurz Highway (Hwy. 95). For more information, call Top Gun Raceway, (775) 423-0223.
