Johnson Rides Goodyears To Tie Nhra Pro Stock Victory Mark

National Hot Rod Association: Warren Johnson beat Jim Yates and tied Bob Glidden all in one race. Johnson's victory over Yates in the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals at Gateway International Raceway was the 85th of his storied Pro Stock career, drawing him even with Glidden on the all-time list. Only John Force, with 95, has more career victories. Johnson is perfect in four final-round appearances this season, beating Yates with a 6.908-second, 200.74 mph run.

Interestingly, all four semi-finalists in the Pro Stock class were using the Goodyear D1239 drive tire. The D1239 appears to be gaining in popularity with the arrival of the summer months. Some sportsman-class teams have started using the D1239 as well.

Doug Kalitta beat Kenny Bernstein in the Top Fuel final, using a better reaction time to get the job done. Kalitta's 4.772-second, 302.82 mph pass was not as fast as Bernstein, but Kalitta's quicker reaction time was the key. Gary Scelzi had the low elapsed time and highest speed for the weekend, a 4.563-second ET and 319.45 mph run in qualifying.

Taylor Lastor won his first-ever national victory when he beat Randy Daniels in Pro Stock Truck.

Veteran Dave Rampy beat Santo Volpe in the Competition Eliminator final and Dave Rowe won the Pro Modified exhibition class.

In all, Goodyear won six of the 13 classes. That brings the tire maker to an industry-leading 75 wins.
