CHEVROLET NOTES AND QUOTES SEARS CRAFTSMAN NATIONALS GATEWAY INTL RACEWAY NHRA WINSTON DRAG RACING SERIES SATURDAY, JUNE 27, 1998

PRO STOCK

KURT JOHNSON, AC DELCO CAMARO Z28, hangs on as No. 2 qualifier, 7.037/196.63.

KURT: "Hot 'n' ugly. that's the way the weather's going to be. The race track is going to be hot. We've got a new Camaro here, and it doesn't want to go down a hot race track the way we have it set up right now. We're going to have to shoot from the hip, and take a few guesses. This is about the 10th run on this car, and we've never run under conditions like this before. Right now, it's spinning the tires terrible. There's four or five hundredths left in the car if we can just get it hooked up. We're qualified well, and we're here to play on Sunday, and that's the biggest thing right now. We ran good the last session and were the quickest car out there. Both lanes look about the same right now, so we'll play it by ear tomorrow."

LARRY MORGAN, RAYBESTOS CAMARO Z28, is No. 5 qualifier, 7.064/194.55.

MORGAN: "We are really pleased with that. We have just made consistent changes, made good moves all day. We made changes with everything, clutch, engine -- no, we didn't change the engine, we had the same engine the whole race." IS THIS A TURNING POINT FOR YOU? "I hope so. I think now we are making real consistent runs, I think we're o.k. now. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I hope we get the Camaros in the final round and one of them can win this race." ON LANE SELECTION: "I think the left lane is the best lane. It's smoother. I don't like the right lane. There's a transition down there, at maybe 400 feet, it's difficult to get across that point. Once you cross that point it gets smooth again. That interrupts our run and gives us a little problem. Other than that, I don't see much difference."

TOM HAMMONDS, WINNEBAGO/MAC TOOLS/KENDALL OIL CAMARO Z28, failed to qualify, 7.115/194.76. This is Tom's second event of the year, the first in which he didn't qualify.

HAMMONDS: ON THE FINAL RUN: "It should have been a better run. But it was a good run and hopefully havng a good run in the last session gives us a momentum going into the next race. We have all worked on the qualifying setup. We learned a lot frm this race, especially track conditions and weather, and that will make us a better race team when we face these conditiions again. I think it's kind of the same situation as in Columbus. After that, ym Winnebago Camaro was down on power. We found a couple of electrical glitches here and there. It threw our setup off. We came back the first run this morning and as soon as I let the clutch out it was like I had an extra 50 horsepower, and the setup wasn't the right setup under these conditions, and we were too heavy on the clutch. We came back and the track, I think, was too hot. We ran a pretty good number. The biggest thing is that we learned from the situation." ON NOT QUALIFYING: "I was definitely disappointed, but you look at the names that aren't in this program and they have been racing a lot longer than I have. Being as competitive as I am you always want to do well; at the same time you have to be realistic."
