CLERMONT, Ind. - Award-winning actor and producer Richard Dreyfuss will serve as the grand marshal and honorary starter for the 46th annual U.S. Nationals, the world's most prestigious drag race. The $2.6 million race, the 17th of 23 events in the $45 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series, will be held at Indianapolis Raceway Park, Aug. 30-Sept. 4.

Dreyfuss, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., is best-known for his 1977 Oscar-winning performance in the romantic comedy, The Goodbye Girl, where he claimed Best Actor honors. A career that has included title roles in more than 60 feature films, Dreyfuss earned critical acclaim for performances in such classics as American Graffiti (1973); Jaws (1975); Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977); Always (1989); What About Bob? (1991); Mr. Holland's Opus (1995); and Krippendorf's Tribe (1998). Dreyfuss' most recent film, The Crew, an action comedy co-starring Burt Reynolds, is scheduled for release on Aug. 25.

Dreyfuss is linked to professional drag racing through his recent partnership with Goosehead.com, a teen-age oriented web site owned by 15-year-old Southern California entrepreneur Ashley Power. Goosehead.com is sponsoring three-time NHRA Winston Top Fuel champion Shirley Muldowney in her return to NHRA competition at the U.S. Nationals. Muldowney, who last competed at an NHRA national event in 1997, has 18 career victories, including the U.S. Nationals in 1982. -30-
