Memories of U.S. Nationals past have Morgan amped up for 2010 version

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 29) -- Punctuating the importance of drag racing's oldest and longest-running national event, Pro Stock veteran Larry Morgan remembers every bit of his best U.S. Nationals, even though it occurred 21 years ago in 1989.

"For two straight days I kicked everyone's butt at the U.S. Nationals, the granddaddy of all drag races," the gregarious Morgan said with a laugh. "And I made $120,000, which was a good bit of money at the time. They ran the Pro Stock Shootout at Indy back then and I won that race, then turned around and won the U.S. Nationals. It was about as perfect a weekend as I've ever had.

"Indy's big, no question about it. Heck, this race has been going on so long that even I wasn't around when it started. Now that's some history right there!"

The 56-year-old Morgan is coming off his best outing of the 2010 season, qualifying his Lucas Oil Ford Mustang in the top half of the field three weeks ago in Brainerd, Minn. It was yet another landmark moment for his team, which made a huge change to Ford horsepower and a Mustang body in the off-season. Ford hasn't been competitive in Pro Stock for more than two decades.

"It's a decision we made after a lot of careful thought," said Morgan, an engine builder by trade. "We knew it would take time to catch up with everyone and we've still got a long way to go but we're pleased with the program eight months into a pretty massive change.

"We'd love to have a breakout race in Indy. We just got some new oil from Lucas and it's pretty trick stuff. It helped us pick up some horsepower on the dyno and we're anxious to get out on the track and see how we stack up.

"Indianapolis is Lucas Oil country so we need to put our best foot forward and have a race like we did in 1989. Now wouldn't that be something?"
