Wilson scores win in Indy

CLERMONT, Ind. - Defending two-time NHRA Division 3 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Jeff Wilson opened the year with a bang by winning this past weekend's Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Indianapolis Raceway Park. In the final, Wilson used a quicker reaction time in his Torco Race Fuels/STARCON backed dragster to take the win over current points leader Bill Reichert.

Wilson, from Winfield, Mo., qualified his Marc White tuned blown alcohol dragster second with a 5.436 at 260.66 mph. In round one, he defeated Dave Hirata with a 5.441 at 263.05 mph and then defeated Robin Samsel in the semifinals with a 5.646 at 215.98 mph.

In the final, Wilson took a .017 to .079 starting line advantage and held on to win with a 5.557 at 259.41 mph to Reichert's quicker-but-later 5.515 at 260.26 mph. The win was Wilson's first of the year.

"We made one of our worst runs of the weekend and he made his best in the final," said Wilson. "Luckily I cut a good light, because it went out there and hazed the tires pretty good, then recovered. My crew chief Marc White asked me if I wanted 5.30's or consistency, and I told him to go with consistency. He and the team did a great job, because it really was a tricky track all weekend."

The next stop for the Torco Race Fuels/STARCON team will be the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, May 13-16.

"We need to do well on the national level," stated Wilson. "This will be the first national event for Marc to be tuning, so with the new power we have, we're definitely looking forward to it."
