Larry Meyer Named New Crew Chief On Blue Skoal Racing Funny Car
POMONA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2002 - Larry Meyer was named crew chief on Don Prudhomme's Blue Skoal Racing Funny Car on Monday.
Meyer, from Argyle, Texas, has served as crew chief on Funny Car and Top Fuel teams since 1985 and was crew chief on Cruz Pedregon's championship-winning Funny Car in 1992 - the only time a driver other than John Force won the title since 1990. He replaces Mike Green, who was released Sunday night following the season-opening NHRA Winternationals.
Tommy Johnson Jr., driver of the Blue Camaro, qualified 16th and lost in the first round of the event, prompting Prudhomme to call on Meyer.
"I wasn't happy with the performance of the Blue car," said Prudhomme. "We worked on it a lot last year and made a lot of test runs this year. We had good equipment for Tommy, who is a heck of a driver, but we needed to make a change. At the end of the day, the car was not performing."
Meyer's background includes 14 NHRA national-event wins, including six during Pedregon's comeback run to the title. He won five of the last six races in 1992 to knock Force into second place.
Meyer says he plans to work closely with Ed McCulloch, crew chief on the Ron Capps-driven Green Skoal Racing Camaro, "to make sure both these cars run the same."
"When you have a two-car team it doesn't just double the work, in quadruples it," added Meyer, whose resume includes jobs with several two-car teams.
Meyer won't have to wait long to watch his car run. A test session for both cars is scheduled Friday and Saturday at Firebird Raceway in Chandler, Ariz., to prepare for the next national event, Feb. 22-24, at Firebird Raceway.
