Morgan has ponies lined up just right in his Lucas Oil Mustang
HOUSTON (April 26) – After a 2010 season full of broken parts and frustrations, racing in the NHRA Full Throttle Series is fun again for Pro Stock's Larry Morgan, driver of the Lucas Oil Ford Mustang.
At this point on the calendar a year ago, Morgan was in the midst of six straight races where he failed to qualify for Sunday eliminations. Heading into this weekend's O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals, Morgan has not only qualified for every race, but he's now also running within a few thousandths of a second of the top cars in the class.
"All the hard work is paying off," Morgan said. "I'm good to go now and looking forward to Houston. I think we're a top-half car.
"A year ago at this time, if it rained Friday night, I knew I'd be in trouble on Saturday. Now I know I can get in on any given Saturday if I don't get to run on a Friday, and that's a good feeling."
Morgan said it's taken him this long to get Ford's Pro Stock program off the ground and running smooth.
"People don't realize what a combination of things have to come together to make these cars run well," Morgan said. "It takes a while to get the right combination put together and right now we're as good as we can be.
"We can contend with all these guys on a weekly basis, and I feel good about that."
Morgan said it helps that he has a good history at the Houston track.
"I've been runner-up there before," Morgan said. "It's my kind of track, and I can’t wait to get there.
"We're going to be good from now on, and it'll all start in Houston."
