Troy Coughlin goes out in round one
Troy Coughlin and his yellow and black Jeg's Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier began raceday from the No. 12 position. He qualified with a run of 6.989 at 197.33 mph during the second session.
In the opening round Troy went head-to-head with recently retired NBA standout Tom Hammonds. The two lined up next to each other for the second time in their careers. Their first match up was in Reading, which Troy won.
Both drivers and their Chevy Cavaliers rolled into the pre stage beams slowly. The reaction time advantage went to Hammonds by .015 seconds (.451 to .466). The two cars were door-handle-to-door-handle all the way down the track. The win light went to Hammonds by .0511 at the stripe. Troy ran a slightly slower 7.017 at 196.27 mph.
"We made a good run in the right lane and followed the middle of the groove from start to finish. We sent one of our engines back to the shop and the guys will spend the time between races getting ready for Pomona. Our goal is to win the last race and finish the 2001 NHRA Winston Drag Racing season with a bang," commented Troy.
