Johnson Jr. and Blue Skoal Racingsm Crew Aim To Bounce Back on Saturday at Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 29, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. and the blue Skoal RacingSM team have two additional qualifying attempts to make the cut for Sunday's final eliminations after missing the 4.929-second bump spot Friday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Johnson opened qualifying at The Strip by driving to a run of 8.159 seconds at 102.56 mph on Friday afternoon after Johnson's Chevy Funny Car shook the tires forcing the veteran driver to shut off early. The blue Skoal Racing flopper suffered an ignition malfunction causing Johnson to abort his second qualifying attempt. The five-time NHRA winner sits 23rd in the Funny Car order.
"We suffered an ignition problem on the second pass," Johnson said. "It's really frustrating because we have a good race car and we should have made a solid 4.8-second pass on the second run. We'll keep our heads up and come back on Saturday and make two good runs."
Johnson and the blue Skoal Racing crew look to move into the 16-car field for Sunday's final eliminations when qualifying resumes with sessions at 12:30 and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. Johnson earned his last NHRA victory at The Strip in April 2001.
