LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Pre-race) - When Greg Stanfield, driver of the DBP Enterprises Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, tells you that he is on a mission this weekend at the 2nd Annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals, it may be in your best interest to pay attention.
Stanfield of Bossier City, La. will arrive in Las Vegas on a mission. His mission is to qualify both his and owner/ driver Bart Price's trucks in the top half of the field at the SummitRacing.com Nationals.
"We are on a mission for the rest of the season," said Stanfield. "We are determined to have both trucks in the show at every race for the rest of the year.
"It sounds like a pretty easy thing to do, but as tough as this class has become, it will be real hard to do. It will be a challenge, but it is a challenge that we are up to.
When Stanfield is reminded that just qualifying will not win the Winston Pro Stock Truck Championship, he made the following comments.
"Right now we are not worried about points, but if you look at the big picture, qualifying consistently will make a difference in the points at the end of the season.
"Last season there were only two guys that qualified at every race; me and Bob Panella. Panella won the championship and I finished fifth. Randy (Daniels) finished second and DNQ'ed at one race. So okay, if you qualify at every race you may not win the championship, but you are consistent.
"In my opinion the guy that consistently qualifies in the top half and goes rounds on Sunday, that is going to be the guy that will take home the championship.
"So our plan is to qualify both trucks at every race, and not worry about the championship. The points will work themselves out at the end of the season. Right now, we have to concentrate on one race at a time.
"We are ready to race here in Las Vegas. Last weekend we stayed home and tested at the track in Shreveport. We know what we have in these trucks, and we feel like we are prepared for this high altitude racetrack.
"We know what our mission is, now we just want to get to Las Vegas and get racing."
Qualifying at the 2nd Annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals will take place on Friday April 6 and Saturday April 7. Eliminations get underway at 11:00 AM PST on Sunday April 8.
